Getting to know Michelle Tennant

Drawing from my experiences growing up in culturally diverse communities across the globe, I strive to create a safe space in which your values and beliefs form the foundation of our therapeutic relationship. By pairing your interests, preferences, and strengths with my background in modalities such as CBT, DBT, CPT, ACT, and expressive arts therapy, we’ll work together to craft an approach that works for you. No matter what’s going on in your life that’s led you to seek therapy, we can figure this out together. You don’t have to do it alone. I hold a Master’s in Counselor Education from East Carolina University, which has equipped me with a strong foundation to support clients effectively. My clinical specialties include trauma and abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, mood disorders, personality disorders, and psychotic disorders. I have a special interest in working with survivors of coercive control and intimate partner abuse in all its forms.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style of therapy is entirely client-centered; our sessions are always more about what works for you based on your personality and preferences rather than a specific approach or method that I use with all my clients. The nature of therapy is that we end up talking about some extremely vulnerable topics, steeped in emotions like shame, fear, anger, and sadness. Working through those things is important in order to move forward, but it has to be at the right time, in the right space, and alongside a person with whom you feel safe. With that in mind, my singular focus as a therapist is creating a space and relationship that fosters progress while respecting your timeline and privacy. Our work together will always keep you moving forward, but I will also always meet you where you're at.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Once you book an appointment, I'll send you a welcome email to set up an account with the TherapyNotes™ portal, through which you can complete all necessary initial paperwork before our first session. All paperwork sent to you on the portal MUST be completed before the intake session; if you are unable to complete it by our scheduled time, I will reach out to you to reschedule the appointment. That way we can dive right in and make the most of our time when we meet. Sessions might look a little different each time, but they always center on what works best for you. No matter when, where, or why we meet, it's all about what is most helpful for you based where you're at that day. What we talk about in therapy can be challenging enough; we want to make sure that the process of actually attending appointments is as stress-free as possible. So whether you want to video chat while on your couch or in your car, or just talk on the phone while you're walking around a park, that's what we'll do!
