Psychotherapist
2650 W Montrose Ave, Ste 202, Chicago, IL
My name is Michelle Waters and I am a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) and registered art therapist (ATR) in Chicago (Albany Park neighborhood). I have been an art therapist since 2012 and specialize in treating Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, Autism, PTSD/trauma and executive functioning related issues. I often get the question if art therapy is just for kids, but I have found people of all ages can benefit from engaging with materials. Some of my favorite materials to work with include ceramics, drawing, comics, painting, crochet, and sewing. I am passionate about providing quality care and collaborating with my clients to provide the best outcomes. My clients often share how they appreciate my relational approach and emphasis in building trust in the therapeutic relationship. Many of my clients have tried traditional talk therapy in the past, but found it that it didn't quite fit their needs. My hope is that clients feel empowered to explore their own identities and creativity on their own terms and find materials that speak to them. No experience with art is required and all materials are provided.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style in therapy is relational and client led. I encourage my clients to identify their own goals and reasons for going to therapy. I help clients explore their interests and strengths to help navigate and cope with the challenges in their lives. With using art therapy, I consider it a spectrum of "art as therapy" (using art as a healthy coping tool) to "art psychotherapy" (using art to explore issues more in depth). Often clients use art in a variety of ways, sometimes using it to ground themselves with sensory stimulation, sometimes using it to explore the depths of their trauma, or sometimes to engage in play and curiosity.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session might look like coming into the office (which looks more like an art studio), checking in ('what has your day been like so far?') and exploring some material options. Sometimes clients know exactly what they want to use, and in that case we gather materials and get started. If they are unsure, I can offer some options based on what they are feeling in the moment or what topics they'd like to explore. We will then make art or engage with sensory materials for most of the session, then leave some time at the end for clean up and reflection. No one is required to make art and if you hate a material, we can always switch!
