Getting to know Mildred Phillips

My name is Mildred Phillips, and I am a Florida native. I have been practicing as a Psychotherapist for over 40 years. I began my career working in a Community Mental Health facility before moving on to serve the veteran population on the Mental Health Unit at the James Haley Veteran Hospital. Later, I transitioned into the private sector. Throughout my professional career, I have worked with various outpatient and inpatient facilities, as well as in Partial Hospital programs and with the nursing home population. As a Psychotherapist, I have worked with children aged 8 and older, adolescents, and adults. Individual, Family, Christian Therapy, and Marital Therapy are some of the areas I have focused on most of my career. I returned to college to earn a degree in theology, which led me to include Christian Counseling in my practice. Additionally, I hold a Master's in Social Work from Florida State University. My therapeutic model is rooted in the work of Virginia Satir and Carl Rogers. Although therapy approaches have evolved, the foundation remains similar. I use Carl Rogers' client-centered approach as a core part of my practice. I am very eclectic in my therapeutic model, which has led me to incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is highly effective in treating depression and anxiety by challenging and changing cognitive distortions, improving emotional regulation, and helping clients develop healthy coping skills. I have extensive experience working with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, marital issues, women's issues, family issues, religious concerns, relationship problems, schizophrenia (with symptom control through medication), bipolar disorder, and other mental health disorders. I work closely with medical doctors who manage clients' medications when needed.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a psychotherapist I work with the individual not the diagnoses. Diagnoses defines the symptoms. But, the individual is the person that I see, and the approach in therapy is to give the clients the ability to use the tools learned in therapy to live a mentally healthy life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First I explain my role in therapy. I am there to listen to their reason for seeking therapy. I give them the opportunity to share what brings them to therapy. Have them tell me the therapist their goals. I then will explain what I will bring to the therapy session. I let them know my clinical skills and let them know that should they see or I feel that my training or skills will meet their needs that I will help them find the appropriate provider. For example, if they are seeking medication this would not be a service i am trained to provide. They would be in need of a Medical Doctor. Or should they be in need of any psychological testing, this would be referred to a psychologist. I would want them to now that I am a psychotherapist who is trained to listen and help the client with dealing and learning effective ways to get through the present issues bringing them to therapy. Once this is clear we move forward in setting goals and developing treatment plans.

I do work with client on sliding scale when it is felt by therapist it is appropriate. I do not normally turn a client away for lack of ability to pay the fee. But, this is done on an individual basis.
