Life gets unstable. Sometimes that is trauma. Sometimes it is a change in faith, a first baby and the identity that went with it, or a marriage that is about to start or already under strain. Whatever brought you here, the problem is usually not that something is wrong with you. I am Mitchell West, a Professional Counselor Associate registered in Oregon (R-12272), supervised by Edgar (Julian) Caballero, LPC (C-5993). I work with adults, and sometimes adolescents, at Bedrock Therapy in partnership with Bend Mental Wellness. All of my sessions are currently by video, so I can see clients anywhere in the state. I earned my Master of Arts in Chaplaincy from Brigham Young University in 2023, after beginning graduate work at Harvard Divinity School. Before private practice, I spent two years doing crisis counseling in Madras, Oregon, in hospitals, in the county jail, and in clients' homes, and I briefly advised Deschutes County courts on mental health assessments. My style is practical, direct, and human. I use evidence-based methods and match the method to your problem instead of running everyone through the same protocol. In session, I ask questions, offer tools, and tell you what I actually think.

Getting to know Mitchell West

My style is practical, direct, and human. I use evidence-based methods and match the method to your problem instead of running everyone through the same protocol. In session, I ask questions, offer tools, and tell you what I actually think.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am active in session. I ask questions, offer tools, and tell you what I actually think. If you are looking for someone who mostly listens and nods, I am probably not your best fit. Most people come to me when the ground under them has shifted. Trauma. A change in faith. A first baby and the identity that got lost with it. A marriage that is about to start, or one that is already strained. My training is in trauma, family dynamics and parenting, and spiritual and religious care. On faith specifically: I work with people leaving a religious tradition, people staying in one, and people who genuinely do not know yet. My job is not to talk you into or out of anything. It is to help you carry it while you figure it out. Everything I do is telehealth, which means you can be anywhere in Oregon. It also means privacy is on your end, so plan for a room with a door and headphones if you share space with anyone. I see adults individually and couples. Adolescents case by case. Outside of work I am usually on a mountain trail, in my garden, or with my kids.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is mostly me listening and asking. I want the history, what you have already tried, and what you want to be different. By the end of it you should have a plain-language sense of what we are working on and roughly how long it may take. From there I match the method to the problem. For trauma that often means Prolonged Exposure, a structured approach with a clear beginning and end. For patterns that keep repeating, psychodynamic and attachment-based work. For couples and premarital work, family systems. When faith or meaning is part of the picture, I bring that in directly rather than working around it. Sessions are usually weekly at the start. I check in regularly on whether this is actually working for you, and if it is not, we change the approach or I help you find someone who fits better. The goal is for you to not need me. I will say so out loud when I think we are getting close.
