“I've been a patient of Lorena since early 2020, when I reached out to her via ZocDoc when I was going through a hard time personally. Although initially I had anticipated only meeting with her a few times to help navigate through this specific issue, I soon found myself meeting with her weekly as I found her expertise immensely helpful on an on-going basis. Her kind, thoughtful nature and extensive knowledge in the psychoanalysis space has allowed me to do profound work on myself and navigate through numerous issues throughout the past 5 years. I highly recommend Lorena and her practice if you are looking for a therapist who is dedicated to their patients, and receives them without any judgment. Lorena is extremely responsive, professional, welcoming and truly loves and believes in what she does. ”

Getting to know Monica Lorena Strunk

I'm a clinical social worker trained in Psychoanalysis in France, specifically in the clinically based school of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Stony Brook University. My approach is strictly clinical, which means I operate at the level of what happens in our everyday lives-from the smallest, apparently insignificant moments to the more complex. I primarily listen, but I am neither passive nor silent. I don't seek to hear my voice; I seek my patient's voice. Psychoanalysis is an invitation to speak what's on your mind and soul, what causes difficulty or pain; it's an invitation to allow the expression of what can be said with words but requires time and space for elaboration. It's a space to think, a space to be, with the only goal to fail better and to be better. Within this framework, I address various manifestations of our everyday struggles: feeling stuck, emotional fatigue, feeling overwhelmed by complex emotions, inadequate coping mechanisms, compulsive and inhibiting behaviors, addictive behaviors, gender questions, just to name a few. I'm very comfortable working with young adults trying to grow up and find their voice; with anyone questioning their roles, their “shoulds” and “shouldn'ts”; and with anyone who desires to approach life with a renewed perspective. While my approach is rigorous and thoughtful, I take into consideration my patient's rhythm, strengths, vulnerabilities, and, of course, finances.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer 15 minutes free consultations over the phone or in person, or 45 sessions in person or virtually for a more in depth consultation. I expect to have a few preliminary sessions before starting treatment. The preliminary sessions allows us both to frame the work but also to experience if the fit is right.

Lorena is wonderful! She is warm, comforting and hears every little layer of our sessions. I have grown exponentially in last 3+ years I have been seeing her. The connections she has lead me to, and patterns she has uncovered have helped improve my life. Lorena has gracefully helped me work through/process some big life changes and childhood traumas. The Work is never done and I am more hopeful and encouraged to continue through this wild life with her in my corner. Truly an expert in her field.
