Getting to know Monique Sheppard

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor licensed in Pennsylvania with experience in mental and behavioral health since 2003. I hold a Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling from City University of New York, Hunter College. Over the years, I have worked with individuals facing a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting challenges, career difficulties, addiction, and other mental health or behavioral health issues. I have also supported people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. I consider myself an eclectic psychotherapist because I believe no two individuals are the same, and therefore, treatment should be personalized. The techniques I use depend on where the individual is in their life and their goals for therapy. These techniques may vary from session to session and include, but are not limited to, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Reality Therapy. People seek therapy for many reasons and at different stages in their lives. My approach begins by meeting each person where they are currently. Since every person and situation is unique, I strongly believe in a person-centered approach, as therapy is not one size fits all. I value developing a therapeutic relationship with each individual I serve. My goal is to create a comfortable environment in each session by offering respect, empathy, acceptance, and authenticity. In return, I ask that each person be committed to the process and honest throughout. Taking the step to seek therapy is the first step toward change. If you’re ready to take that step, I am here to guide and support you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

During the first session with me, my plan is to help you understand what to expect in the therapeutic process. I will listen to your concerns, wants and needs. We will develop a plan for moving forward. My goal is to offer a space where you feel comfortable enough to share, be open to my guidance, and want to return for future sessions. Although I am here to offer the guidance, I will remind you of the work that you have to put in, holding you accountable. I will always keep it real and tell you what you need to hear; always in a respectful manner. As we continue working together it is expected for goals to be developed & obtained. As needed, goals may be revised. Progress, no matter how big or small, will be acknowledged as that fosters the abilitiy to move forward in a positive manner.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
