Getting to know Dr. Nashat Ali

Nashat Shams Ali is a licensed clinical professional counselor in Illinois and Florida, based in Chicago and seeing clients by video in both states. She holds a PhD in health psychology and trained in medicine before becoming a therapist. She does not practice medicine or prescribe. What that training gives her is a working understanding of bodies, symptoms, and medical systems that most therapists do not have. Much of her work is with people whose difficulty sits in the body and the mind at the same time: living with a chronic illness, health anxiety, symptoms that have been handed back as stress, and pregnancy, postpartum, and fertility. She treats the physical and the psychological as one problem rather than sending you between two people who never talk to each other. Her two published research projects, presented internationally, examine post-traumatic growth in women, and that shapes how she approaches trauma. Recovery matters, and so does what a person builds afterward. Her own Middle Eastern, South Asian, and multiracial background informs her work with immigrant and multicultural clients, including the exhaustion of translating yourself every day. She speaks English and Hindi, and has taught graduate counseling and psychology since 2020. She sees adults, teens 13 and older, and couples. Approaches include CBT, DBT, trauma-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, narrative therapy, and solution-focused brief therapy. Your first visit is a full intake session. Sessions are held by secure video, and you need to be located in Illinois or Florida at the time of your appointment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The first session is mostly me listening. I want to hear what is going on in your life and in your body, because for many people those are the same story. If you have a diagnosis, bring what you know about it. If you do not, that is fine too. I will ask about your health, your history, and what you have already tried, and by the end I will tell you how I would approach the work. I do not treat symptom relief as the finish line. We will work on what is hurting now, and we will also look at what you want to build afterward. You set the pace, and you can tell me when something is not working.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After the first session, we agree on what we are working toward and how we will know it is moving. Most clients meet with me weekly at the start, and we adjust as things settle. I draw on CBT, DBT, trauma-focused, psychodynamic, and narrative approaches, and I choose based on what you are dealing with rather than using one method for everyone. When health is part of the picture, I work with the physical and emotional sides together. With your permission, I can coordinate with your other providers. Every few weeks we check in on what is helping and what is not, and change course when we need to.

Ongoing session: $150 for 50 minutes

I appreciated that Nashat understood how stigma around therapy and mental health can show up in immigrant families. She made the process feel comfortable and normal rather than clinical or intimidating.
I felt like Nashat understood the experience of balancing two cultures and the pressure that can come with trying to meet everyone’s expectations. Our conversations felt very validating and practical.
Nashat created a space where I could talk honestly about culture, family expectations, relationships, and identity. I never felt like she was stereotyping me or assuming she already knew my experience.
As someone from a Middle Eastern background, I appreciated being able to talk openly about family pressure, guilt, boundaries, and expectations without feeling judged or misunderstood.
One of the biggest reasons I felt comfortable with Nashat was that I didn’t have to spend half the session explaining cultural context. She understood the nuances while still treating me as an individual.
Nashat was very thoughtful about the role culture, family, and community play in mental health. I appreciated that she didn’t treat those things as either completely good or completely bad.
It was refreshing to talk with a therapist who understood how complicated mental health can feel in a South Asian family. She was respectful of my culture without making assumptions about me.
really appreciated working with someone who understood the cultural and family dynamics that can come with being South Asian. I didn’t feel like I had to explain every little thing before we could get to the actual issue.
I’ve had experiences where I felt like I had to translate my family or cultural background to a therapist first. With Nashat, I felt understood much more quickly, which helped me feel comfortable opening up.
Nashat understood the tension between family expectations, cultural values, and trying to make choices for myself. That made it much easier to open up and feel understood.
