Getting to know Nathaniel Smith-Marrone

Is your relationship with yourself or important people around you diminished by problematic thoughts, feelings, or behaviors? Having difficulty reaching goals in work, school, family, or other significant areas of your life? With over 25 years of clinical experience helping adults overcome such issues, I bring a thoughtful, sensitive, accepting, and thorough approach to the work. **I can't work with people outside of NY State at time of video sessions. I can't meet with those documenting disability leave or using Medicare, Medicaid or SWSCHP related plans.(Including any plans with ID numbers beginning with JLJ) ** I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Catholic University of America and have completed externships in Adult Group Psychotherapy at the Center for Group Studies and in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute. I also earned my Bachelor’s degree from Brown University. I have been effective working with a wide range of ages and backgrounds on issues such as depression, anger management, anxiety, relationships, stress, transitions, behavior problems, mood disorders, and many others. What are the unique life circumstances that you have faced? Are there important parts of you that have not been sufficiently seen, heard, or respected? I engage my clients in a mutual process of inquiry to improve self-understanding, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. You deserve help. A consultation session(s) can help as you search for the right fit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Aside from my individual work I believe very much in the power of group therapy for many people and can also provide this in a much more affordable way both in network and out of network($60 per group meeting out of network). My therapy groups are for adults with mixed issues who are evaluated to be compatible with one another. Consider exploring an extremely powerful technique that studies show helps most people just as expediently and effectively as individual therapy. After an initial individual intake meeting(s) we will decide if there is a group in my practice appropriate for you. Groups are open ended in duration and in an open format that is guided by the therapist towards interactions and topics that are beneficial to the members. Some members benefit by also being in individual treatment with myself or another therapist.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a typical session I help people put their thoughts and feelings about their current and past life in to words. I help people make connections between what they are experiencing and the symptoms or problems they are encountering. The process of talking and being heard in an accurate way is one of the basic building blocks of healing. Beginning to connect what you think and feel to a more comprehensive understanding of how your present and past are contributing to difficulties follows from this. Sessions last 45 minutes. No one session is the same as people are very different and require different kinds of help at different stages of treatment.

Dr. Smith was exceptional. I felt comfortable telling him everything but also I left the meeting knowing where to turn. Specifically, I know exactly what I have to work on. This is my first time speaking with a professional and I liked that he was very helpful and detailed about every part of my concern. I am looking forward to our next session.

I had a wonderful experience with this provider. He was a great listener and excellent at communicating thoughts and observations in a clear, concise way that helped each session to feel packed with importance. I was only able to utilize his services for a short while, but in that time I managed to uncover quite a few new observations that I believe will lead to some major realizations and hopefully breakthroughs in the near future. Highly recommend!

Dr. Smith-Marrone was an excellent listener and a very effective communicator. It was my first time having a virtual appointment of this sort, and so the experience was very new. Still, he managed to make me comfortable and did a great job of listening to me and getting to know a lot about me during our intake session. Will definitely be going back!

This was my first time receiving this kind of care, and I must say I am so glad that I came across this practice. I did the video chat session and was able to meet from the comfort of my home- a huge priority for me during the pandemic as well as for my social anxiety. I was able to talk freely and was happy to have my thoughts and feelings validated and have some professional insight into topics discussed. Not only would I recommend to others, but I am looking forward to continue seeing this professional.
