What should a new client know about working with you?

I work from an integrative perspective and tend to be more psychodynamic in my approach as opposed to cognitive-behavioral, the two main umbrellas clinicians tend to fall under. This means my sessions more often tend to be more of an open format in which we will eplore your thoughts, feellings and past and present history in an effort to make connections and improve your self-understanding. I do not generally assign homework or proceed in a more prescriptive lesson-type format as is more typical in those who lean towards more of a cognitivie-behavioral approach. I also practice group therapy from a similar perspective and sometimes, where appropriate and mutually deteremined, work with people in that modality in addition to or instead of individual therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a typical session I help people put their thoughts and feelings about their current and past life in to words. I help people make connections between what they are experiencing and the symptoms or problems they are encountering. The process of talking and being heard in an accurate way is one of the basic building blocks of healing. Beginning to connect what you think and feel to a more comprehensive understanding of how your present and past are contributing to difficulties follows from this. Sessions last 45 minutes. No one session is the same as people are very different and require different kinds of help at different stages of treatment.
