Getting to know Naureen Dharani
*** PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING: Once you schedule a session via Zocdoc, I will reach out to do an initial consult to make sure we are a good match in working together. YOUR APPOINTMENT WILL NOT BE CONFIRMED WITHOUT AN INITIAL CONSULT FIRST.
I first and foremost come from a South Asian background. Growing up, I had difficulties navigating my parents' well-intentioned parenting styles, which led me to become someone who did not know how to process emotions, communicate my needs, and accept myself for who I am. Through my own therapy, I have overcome many struggles I presently observe in the South Asian community. I have come to realize that it is my purpose to help as many people as I can who have similar obstacles as I did growing up.
I earned my MSEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. John's University. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State and also a National Certified Counselor (NCC). Additionally, I am a Level II Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, working with clients who present with extensive trauma. I am also a Certified Grief Educator who has been able to help clients transition through various grief and loss experiences.
In addition to trauma-related issues, I specialize in addiction (specifically substance abuse), codependency, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationships, and general mental health. I have worked tirelessly in my religious community to combat South Asian mental health stigmas and promote access to mental health care. I am well versed in Asian and South Asian cultural issues and provide a safe, empathetic, and nonjudgmental space to discuss your mental health concerns. I understand that it can be difficult to communicate cultural nuances to non-POC populations and can assist you in having dialogue surrounding complicated topics within interfaith relationships.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I have an eclectic approach to therapy with an emphasis on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Innerchild Work, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and talk therapy. I inspire clients to work on their personal development between sessions through the use of exercises and light readings. I enjoy having an integrative and collaborative process in therapy and believe that the work done in therapy continues outside of the session. I also regularly attend continuing education forums to expand my knowledge and keep up with evidence based practices.

I've worked with Naureen for two years and she has been patient and empathetic and truly wonderful. I had never been in therapy before, and I couldn't recommend Naureen more!

Naureen’s sessions were very focused on the main issues I hoped to address when we first started. She has excellent listening skills and is not afraid to ask the hard questions that necessarily pushed me out of my comfort zone. Through the questions she asked, she challenged my deeply internalized biases and broadened my perspective without imposing any of her own judgments. The work I did with Naureen was restorative and I felt like there were tangible outcomes from our sessions.
Thank you, Naureen!!

I’ve been working with Naureen for over two years and our time together has been life changing. I’ve had therapy with other providers in the past, but my experience with Naureen has been so different. She listens. I feel heard in every session and she does it with much compassion, without judgement, and offers tools and worksheets that provide me with further guidance after our sessions are over. Over the last two years, we’ve worked on creating more self love, breaking unproductive patterns/thought processes, and I can most definitely say that Naureen has helped me to change my life for the better. I’ve never felt more secure, confident, and healthier overall in my mind, body, soul. I’m grateful for the positive relationship I’ve built with Naureen and I can actually see and feel the amazing positive and tangible results that’s come out of our time together. I’d recommend her in a heartbeat to all my friends and family, and anyone considering therapy.

I've been in therapy with Naureen for over two years now and am so grateful to her for helping me get to who I am proud to be today (and still working on!). Her practice is rooted in compassion, strong communication, trust, accountability, patience, and self-love. She is nonjudgmental and honest, and has mastered the delicate balance of guiding, advising, and listening based on her client's needs. As a south asian woman, she's been incredibly validating and trauma informed, and has often understood and anticipated what I hadn't myself yet. She is great at talk therapy but what I love most about her practice is how intentional and dedicated she is about motivating me and showing me how to put in the work to tangibly improve. Be prepared for weekly exercises, shocking revelations, and lots of eloquent metaphors! Ive experienced real change in my abilities to emotionally regulate and set boundaries and navigate my life healthily because of it. Cannot recommend her enough!!

Naureen helped me establish a connection with and an understanding of myself. She also shared practical methodologies to understand, cope, and process my feelings that i still implement today almost a year after my last session.

Dr. Naureen was a great therapist for the year that we worked together. She helped me identify thought patterns, take a step back from situations to see things more objectively, and not take things so personally. I really enjoyed Naureen's direct and thoughtful approach to establishing boundaries in personal and professional settings.

Naureen is such a thorough, thoughtful practitioner. She is so friendly and approachable and helped me feel comfortable almost immediately. She was able to help me set goals and gently call me in if I fell off track. She introduced me to so many resources and frameworks to help increase my awareness around my needs and how that may affect my relationships with others. She was always open to feedback and honest communication. I highly, highly recommend working with Naureen! I learned so much and really felt like I was able to improve my relationships as a result.
