Getting to know Nicola Curtin

Before earning my Masters in Counseling, I earned a PhD in social and personality psychology and worked as a researcher and university professor as well as in organizational learning and development. This background deeply informs how I show up as a therapist. I view therapy as a collaborative, client-led process. The goal is to give you a space where you can safely look at what needs attention, challenge yourself when necessary, and grow on your own terms. What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m a licensed therapist, located in Oakland, CA. I’m licensed in both California and Michigan, and provide tele-therapy in both states. Deciding to start therapy takes courage, and I am glad you are here! If you are feeling anxious, sad, lonely, or overwhelmed, I can help. Or maybe you are feeling pretty good, ready for a new adventure, exploring a potential transition, or wanting to better understand yourself. Together, we can create a space that is all yours and safe for exploration and growth. My approach is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed. You know yourself and your story better than anyone else. My role is to bring clinical structure, practical tools, and encouragement to help you figure out what, if any, changes you want to make and the next steps on that journey. Together, we work to create a supportive environment where you can step back, evaluate things, and make the changes you want to see.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy with me is active and conversational. My approach is collaborative and client-led, as well as evidence-based. The purpose of therapy is to have an affirming place to safely challenge yourself to grow in ways that are defined and determined by you, or to explore (and celebrate) aspects of yourself or your experience that you feel need attention. In addition to treating anxiety and other mood disorders, I specialize in working with OCD using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard, most well-researched treatment for OCD.
