Relationships are hard, and it isn't a subject we learn in all the years of schooling. Most people don't understand why they aren't understood by their partners or vice versa. We are listening to our partners to respond to how we think and feel about what's being said, but we don't stop our internal dialogue to hone in to validate their thoughts and emotions. Ever heard your partner say, "you aren't hearing me" or "you never listen to me"? Ever feel the same? That's because you aren't communicating effectively with each other. Sometimes, it's past trauma haunting your present relationships. Other times, it's missing steps of clarification and curiosity that limit the interpretation of what is being heard. I've worked with couples utilizing the Gottman Method to help improve relationships and marriages, move through and beyond betrayals, resentment, and past hurts to create a stronger foundational friendship necessary for a long term relationship. What I've come to realize is the need for singles struggling to maintain healthy and connected relationships due to individual struggles. Individual work in therapy can help identify relational patterns and habits that both help and hinder relationships. People seek out what they think they want without asking if that's truly what they need in a partner. Do you hear partners tell you, "you don't open up" or "you never tell me how you feel"? There are many reasons people struggle with emotional expression. It could be seen as a flaw or weakness, wasn't taught to them as a child, never felt heard in the past, or can't find the words in the moment. These are all common difficulties that have solutions that will lead you to healthier and happier relationships in all areas of your life. Solutions that help you take responsibility for how you show up in relationships, setting expectations and boundaries for how others treat you, and being the person you want to be for your future self.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I utilize different modalities based on the needs of the client. Many interventions and supports come from the Gottman Method when focusing on romantic relationships. First, revisiting and processing past experiences is necessary to let go and move forward. My approach to therapy is to provide a safe and open space for you to explore what has been hurting you, holding you back, or causing you to feel like relationships never last long enough to go anywhere. You are the driver during our time together. I'm there to help keep you on the road to a better you, whatever that may look like for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is focused solely on having a conversation of what is important for you. Does it feel like a good fit for you? No pressure, no high stakes. The second session is completing the initial intake evaluation to meet insurance requirements. From the third session forward we start the work where you feel comfortable. Some people prefer to dive right into their goals and needs for change. Some are still trying to understand what are those needs. Where ever you are starting, we take the journey together until I'm not needed anymore. You decide where you go and the pace you take.
