Nicole Rivera, LMSW

Psychotherapist
2024 Williamsbridge Rd, Bronx, NY
For more than twenty-five years, my full-time job was being a wife and mother to five children. During those years I became the person everyone came to when life got hard. I was advocating for family members, navigating complex medical systems for my autistic son, supporting people through crises, and making sure everyone else was okay. I didn't have a name for what I was doing back then. I was just showing up for the people I loved. I'm Nicole, and the turning point came when my teenage daughter began struggling with her mental health. I was her mom, the person who was supposed to know what to do, and I was completely unequipped. I realized how much families need professionals who don't just understand diagnoses but who know what it feels like to sit on the other side of the office as a scared parent wondering if they're doing enough. That experience gave me the courage to return to school in my forties after being away for nearly twenty-five years. Three years later I'm a licensed social worker, and every difficult thing I went through to get here informs how I practice. My lived experience doesn't replace my clinical training, but it runs alongside it in a way that clients can feel. I know what it's like to reinvent yourself and discover that healing doesn't have an expiration date.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want you to bring your whole self into the room with all the messy parts and the parts you're still trying to understand. People in my life have told me I have a way of recognizing what someone needs even when they aren't quite sure how to express it themselves. I don't want to be the person who tells you how to live your life. I want to help you understand yourself well enough to make choices that feel authentic to you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I'm drawn to working with women because I know how often they're expected to carry everyone else's emotional weight while neglecting their own. I specialize in ACEs, trauma, anxiety, maternal and women's mental health, grief, parenting, life transitions, and supporting caregivers. I work with adults 25 and up, individually, as couples, and with families. I'm also comfortable working with neurodivergent adults and families because I've navigated those systems personally and professionally.
