Psychotherapist

Hi, I’m Nicole! I help teens and adults reconnect with their authentic selves. I passionately believe that healing starts from within the body. Without honoring our bodies and nervous systems, we cannot truly get to the root of healing. I focus on cultivating safety in the body, allowing us to experience and honor emotions that have been buried, neglected, or avoided. My approach is to create and foster a safe, warm, and honest relationship with clients in order to help them achieve a deep understanding of themselves and their power. I work from a somatic, nervous system, and trauma-informed perspective to bring the whole person to light. I specialize in working with clients with complex trauma/PTSD, eating disorders, substance use, perfectionism, mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders and more. Before becoming a counselor, I was a special education teacher working with students with Social-Emotional Behavioral Disabilities in Title 1 schools. This experience taught me that safety is the crux of all growth, development, and self-discovery. I carried this understanding into the field of mental health, working in residential care for both severe mental illnesses and eating disorders, community mental health, domestic violence services, and the foster care system before founding Emerald Mental Health. Through these experiences, I have developed a passion for treating the whole person — not just symptoms or experiences. It is my honor to walk with clients through their personal journeys of self-discovery, and to hold space for the depths of the human experience. Let’s explore together and get back to you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Sharing your innermost thoughts and realities can be scary. There is power in vulnerability. Working with the right therapist can help empower you to embrace the deeper changes needed in order to navigate through life’s challenges. I understand that being vulnerable can be difficult; establishing and creating an authentic connection with your therapist can help. So many of us struggle with our mental health and experience stigma around it. Trauma is the response to scary or dangerous experiences and almost always an underlying cause of various mental health conditions. Unhealed trauma can show up as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, personality or mood disorders, codependency, physical illness, and other symptoms. Confronting shame, guilt, and fears and healing trauma is life changing. Trauma can oftentimes make us feel powerless, lost and disconnected. Working through the trauma is not an easy process, but one that creates pathways to the life you deserve. Creating agency in your treatment can establish a sense of stability as we move forward in healing

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I understand the unique struggles associated with identity and stigma in the context of these conditions. I prioritize feelings of safety and belonging. Together, we'll explore ways to develop a strong and resilient sense of self, free from the burdens of societal judgment. My ultimate goal is to empower you to not only overcome your challenges but to thrive and find a path to a more fulfilling life. You're not alone on this journey, and I'm here to support you every step of the way. I’m a firm believer in creating and maintaining authentic and meaningful connections with clients. The first session is all about setting the tone for our therapeutic relationship, removing any intimidation from the therapy process, and creating a space that feels safe. Moving forward, it is my goal to support you through the hard work of self-discovery, or recovery. This will look like empowering you to see change within yourself, tools and/or homework to supplement work done during sessions, and tailoring a treatment plan that best fits your unique strengths and needs. Treatment plans grow as we grow and so you can expect that our time spent together will reflect the changes we see and empower you to keep going.

There are several reasons I do not accept insurance but the paramount reasons for this are: having to provide a clinical diagnosis within 50 minutes of meeting clients which then follows clients throughout their wellness journeys which can perpetuate the feelings of stigma; having to prescribe to a specific modality to ensure services are covered by insurance companies, taking away the ability to tailor treatment plans to your unique needs and strengths; and the instability that can sometimes come from using insurance companies- the uncertainty of how many sessions insurance will cover, disrupting a flow of continuous, stable treatment. I do have limited spaces reserved for sliding scale clients. I work with clients who are partnered with non-profit organizations such as Coffee Hip Hop and Mental Health (specific to the city of Chicago), as well as Open Path. Please check with your non-profit organization for applications if you are interested in a sliding scale. I also utilize Mentaya: You might be able to get reimbursed for out-of-network therapy!
