Throughout my education, including earning my Master’s in Social Work from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, I was not trained to work with an ideal client; rather, I was educated on how to work with people, families, and communities of all identities and presenting problems. Although I can’t imagine an ideal client with specific issues, needs, or goals, there are certain characteristics that aid in the therapeutic process. Those characteristics are openness, honesty, respectfulness, and commitment. I respect and treat each client as their own individual, and because of this, I utilize many different treatment modalities and specialties. Overall, I take a solution-focused, strength-based, client-centered, Person in Environment approach with all my clients. Other treatment specialties are added as needed. Sessions are a nonjudgmental space to think, understand, and implement strategies to better a client’s presenting problems. All emotions are welcomed and processed, and a client can begin to understand their inner workings. During sessions, all that matters to me is you, the client, and what matters to you.
