What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to know exactly what you want to work on before starting therapy. Many clients begin with something as simple as, “I know I’m struggling, but I’m not completely sure why.” My style is warm, conversational, and collaborative. I will listen carefully, ask questions, help you notice patterns, and work with you to identify what may be keeping you stuck. Therapy with me is not about judging your choices or telling you what you “should” do. It is about helping you understand yourself more clearly and giving you tools to create changes that actually fit your life. Because I am trauma-informed and trained in EMDR, we may also explore how past experiences continue to affect the way you feel, respond, or relate to others today. EMDR may be incorporated when it is appropriate and when you feel ready—we do not have to jump immediately into difficult memories. Most importantly, I want therapy to feel safe enough for you to be honest, curious, imperfect, and yourself.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are focused on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. We will talk about what has been happening in your life, what you would like to change, what has or has not helped in the past, and what you hope to get from our work together. From there, we will develop a treatment plan that fits your goals. Some sessions may involve talking through current situations, identifying patterns, practicing new skills, or exploring emotions and relationships. When appropriate, we may also use EMDR to work with experiences that continue to feel emotionally “stuck” or influence your reactions in the present. EMDR does not mean you have to tell every detail of a difficult experience, and we will spend time preparing before doing trauma-processing work. You remain in control of the pace throughout therapy. Sessions are collaborative rather than rigid. We will regularly check in about what is helping, what is not, and what you want to focus on next.
