Getting to know Payal Patel

My name is Payal (pronounced like Pile). I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an MSW from University of Houston. I changed my career path in my mid-30s and love the decision. I value mental health and have been a client in addition to being a provider. I have worked in inpatient substance use treatment facilities and in outpatient therapy. My specialties include substance use, navigating life changes, anxiety, depression, relationship issues and mood dysregulation. I currently live in Houston with my standard poodle, Lucy. When I'm not working or with family, I'm doing jigsaw puzzles, baking, or reading fiction novels.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a person-centered approach while being aware of the many systems in which you live and function. I meet you where you are, while also challenging you along the way. As a South Asian, I take into account cultural influences on behaviors, thoughts, and experiences. I welcome feedback from clients; I want to be of help and appreciate when knowing if a current approach is not working for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I understand therapy can feel uncomfortable for many people. Our first session will be about getting to know each other and figuring out what you need from our time together. I will ensure I check-in throughout the process to ensure you feel you are meeting your goals and pivot as needed.
