What should a new client know about working with you?

My philosophy rests on the belief that every individual possesses unique strengths and the innate capacity for growth. I strive to honor each person's story, fostering resilience and encouraging self-discovery through genuine dialogue and thoughtful guidance. In my practice, I draw upon the principles of person-centered therapy, inspired by Carl Rogers, in combination with life coaching rooted in my 40 year career in higher education and counseling. I work with individuals across the lifespan—from teens navigating the challenges of adolescence, to seniors reflecting on life’s transitions—as well as couples and families seeking deeper connection and understanding. My goal is to create a safe, empathetic, and accepting environment where everyone can freely express their dreams, challenges, and hopes for personal development. My approach supports both emotional exploration and practical goal-setting, ensuring clients feel heard and supported as they navigate their journeys. Guided by my experiences in academia and student support, I listen attentively and offer reflective feedback, providing unconditional positive regard. Rather than dictating the direction of our conversations, I consider myself a collaborative partner, trusting in my clients’ abilities to find meaningful insights and solutions themselves. I blend open-ended therapeutic dialogue with life coaching techniques—clarifying values, helping clients envision their futures, and recognizing the strengths they've built through academic and professional growth. I encourage clients to set their own agenda, discuss issues relevant to their lives and careers, and develop actionable plans. Over time, I witness my clients growing in self-awareness and self-acceptance, and gaining the motivation and confidence needed to pursue their personal and professional aspirations. For privacy and consent reasons, all patients age 18+ are required to book their own appointments.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical person-centered therapy session supplemented with life coaching begins with establishing a welcoming and nonjudgmental atmosphere where clients are encouraged to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences freely. The session often starts with open-ended questions, allowing clients to set the agenda and identify topics most relevant to their current lives or goals. As the conversation unfolds, I listen attentively and provide reflective feedback, demonstrating empathy and unconditional positive regard. Throughout the session, therapeutic dialogue is seamlessly combined with life coaching techniques. This might include clarifying personal values, envisioning desired futures, or identifying specific strengths and accomplishments. Together, we may develop concrete action plans, break down larger goals into manageable steps, and address any barriers to progress. The process remains client-driven, empowering individuals to take ownership of their growth while feeling supported and understood. By the end of the session, clients often leave with greater self-awareness, practical strategies, and renewed confidence to pursue their aspirations.
