Phyllis Li, MS

Phyllis Li, MS

Psychotherapist
541 Bay Ridge Pkwy, Brooklyn, NY
Growing up in a traditional Asian-American household, I was raised with the values of discipline, perseverance, and achievement. I followed the expected path—studying hard, attending an elite university, and building a successful career in banking. But after 12 years in the industry, I found myself constantly stressed and overwhelmed by the pressure to be perfect. Becoming a parent made it even harder to balance, and after the birth of my second child, I made the difficult decision to leave my job to focus on my family. During the next five years as a full-time parent, I reconnected with music—a passion from my childhood that became a powerful coping tool. I learned to play the guitar, began singing again, and eventually started leading a music class for parents and babies around Brooklyn. Music became my pathway back into a career—this time, one that felt authentic and aligned with who I truly am.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a clinician, I specialize in working with two primary populations: (1) adults navigating anxiety, depression, and the lingering effects of past trauma, and (2) children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. I bring a unique blend of personal and professional experience to my work, having walked my own path of growth, reflection, and transformation. My approach is collaborative and client-centered—I meet people where they are and tailor therapy to honor their unique experiences, backgrounds, and goals. I see myself as both a guide and a partner in my clients’ journeys toward self-discovery and healing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Music is also an integral part of the therapeutic experience I offer. Singing, for example, engages the breath and activates the vagus nerve, helping to calm the nervous system and regulate emotions. Playing music together fosters a sense of connection and synchronicity, often leaving clients feeling lighter, more grounded, and carrying positive memories beyond the session.
