“My counseling sessions were extremely helpful. Rachel Berger was professional at the same time very approachable. Being trans it is sometimes difficult to discuss my comforts and discomforts being accepted in this world. Being Trans one needs to feel safe and heard. I highly recommend Rachel Berger to anyone who wants to work on anything but especially people in the LGBTQIA community. ”

Getting to know Rachel Berger

Rachel Berger Counseling is a private practice offering remote counseling services to individuals in Texas, Colorado, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. I am licensed to provide counseling in these states and specialize in supporting clients with LGBTQ issues, gender identity, depression, anxiety, disabilities, body-focused repetitive behaviors (such as skin picking, nail-biting, and lip or cheek biting), and self-harm. I hold a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from The University of Texas Permian Basin and a Bachelor's degree from Texas Woman's University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The core of my therapeutic beliefs centers around offering mindfulness, empathy, and presence. From here, I will work with you to find effective modalities of counseling for the issues at hand, such as sexuality and gender issues, personal development, mental health, and life changes. Theories of counseling that I draw from include humanistic, CBT, REBT, feminist, DBT, solution-focused therapy, and psychodynamic methods.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The process of working with me involves filling out paperwork before your session; it is an information form and consent to counseling services form. If you are using insurance I will connect you to the billing company I am using, Headway. They will contact you and prompt you to create a profile. They will handle payment for the sessions. In the first session, we will talk about your background information and what you are looking for from counseling. The following sessions are less structured and focused on previously discussed goals and presenting issues at the time of the session. I end sessions with goals.

I went for my initial intake appointment, and won't be coming back. There was no introduction from her or any kind of effort to establish a rapport. She went straight into asking me a roster of questions and didn't ask me to elaborate on any answers I gave. After the questions, she immediately started wrapping up with a full 20 minutes left of the 50 minute session to go. When I mentioned the extra time, she asked me if there was anything else I wanted to talk about- put on the spot, I couldn't think of anything off the bat, so the call ended. Looking back, it strikes me as quite unprofessional to not at least try to fill the time you are being paid for, at least to introduce yourself and your therapeutic practices. It was like I was expected to know exactly how I wanted my therapy sessions to go and be structured- there were no suggestions given on her part, and the absence of follow-up questions showed a huge lack of care and effort in my view. I got nothing out of this meeting.

Rachel has been extremely helpful in providing understanding and resources on the issues I’ve been facing with everyday life. I see her once a week and she is always timely and available, even if I have to change an appointment last minute. She also replies to any text messages quickly. She has helped me discover my personal values during our sessions. I really appreciate it!
She listens and takes the time to get to know you without pressuring you to talk about your feelings. She lets you go at your own pace.
Rachel is always prompt and ready to listen. She is very accommodating to my schedule and my financial ups and downs. I appreciate the safe space she creates for me and really listens to what I have to say rather than just hearing me and nodding along. She has really helped me to grow as a person
