Getting to know Rachel Blustain

I strive to make therapy a creative and collaborative process that helps clients gain courage, flexibility, and resilience. I have an informal and at times light-hearted style, while also being deeply attentive and responsive to clients’ changing needs. I have extensive experience in helping clients overcome complex trauma, anxiety, emotional reactivity, perfectionism, and life transitions. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, which has equipped me with a strong foundation to support my clients effectively.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe it is important for clients to connect the mind and body. To facilitate this connection I help clients notice how their feelings express themselves internally. Over time, this noticing and naming increase self-compassion as well as the ability to regulate and respond effectively to one’s emotions. In addition, my past work as a writer and editor makes me particularly attuned to themes in clients’ stories. Through exploring the creation of their narratives, clients better understand their unique strengths and vulnerabilities, as well as how to care for different parts of themselves. Lastly, I work with clients to recognize what brings them satisfaction, meaning, and joy. As clients clarify their values and life philosophies, they make space for different ways of thinking, acting, and feeling.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

For many years, I worked as the editor of a publication written by parents who experienced the trauma of having their children removed from their custody. In that role, I learned some of the many ways that personal suffering and social injustice are connected, and how coming to understand the relationship between the two can help people overcome shame and discover who they want to be in the world. I bring those insights about the interplay between the social and the personal into my work as a therapist.

Rachael was meant for this profession and it shows. I am so happy to have come across this office with such amazing staff. It has been so hard to find a good therapist especially with the pandemic and everything becoming virtual. Rachael is easy to talk to and always has the right things to say that has helped me better reflect on myself and what I need to change as a person
