Psychotherapist
14225 University Ave, Ste 225, Waukee, IA
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Des Moines Mental Health Center, and I provide therapy for children, teens, and adults through both in-person sessions and telehealth. My approach is warm, person-centered, and collaborative, and I draw from evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), behavioral theory, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I work with clients who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, mood concerns, emotional regulation, self-esteem, identity development, life transitions, autism spectrum-related needs, and co-occurring mental health challenges. I also provide neurodivergent-affirming care and strive to create a therapeutic space where clients feel respected, understood, and supported. Many people come to therapy wanting more than just a place to talk — they want practical tools, healthier coping strategies, and a better understanding of themselves. My goal is to help clients feel safe enough to be honest, supported enough to grow, and empowered enough to make meaningful changes in everyday life. If you are looking for a psychotherapist serving the Des Moines area who values both connection and progress, I aim to make therapy feel personalized, grounded, and genuinely helpful.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you’re new to therapy, I want you to know that you do not have to show up with everything figured out. Many clients start therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally exhausted, or unsure how to put their experience into words. My role is to help create a space where you feel comfortable enough to start where you are. My style is supportive, nonjudgmental, and collaborative, but also intentional. I want clients to feel heard and validated, while also helping them build practical skills and make real progress over time. I often work well with people who want a therapist who is compassionate and approachable, but who can also help them better understand patterns, emotions, relationships, and coping strategies. When working together, you can expect therapy to be tailored to your needs, goals, and stage of life. I work with children, teens, and adults, and I adjust the process so it feels developmentally appropriate, relevant, and useful. Whether you are seeking help for anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, identity concerns, life transitions, or neurodivergent-affirming support, I want therapy to feel like a place where you can be honest, build insight, and move forward with greater confidence.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the beginning, I focus on getting to know you as a whole person — not just the symptoms or stressors that brought you in. Early sessions usually involve talking through what has been going on, what feels most difficult right now, what you would like to change, and what goals would feel meaningful for therapy. As we build that foundation, I work with clients to identify patterns in thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Depending on your needs, sessions may include processing current challenges, exploring underlying experiences, building emotional regulation skills, strengthening coping tools, and learning more effective ways to respond to stress. My approach is flexible and individualized. Some clients need space to process deeply, while others want more structure, strategy, and skill-building — most need both at different times. I use evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT to help clients better manage anxiety, depression, mood concerns, distress tolerance, and day-to-day life challenges. Over time, the goal is for therapy to help you feel more understood, more equipped, and more confident navigating life outside the therapy room. I want the process to feel collaborative, practical, and paced in a way that supports steady progress.
