Rachel Thomas, LCSW

Psychotherapist
OH
An ideal patient voluntarily comes to therapy seeking assistance resolving the struggles they experience which are interfering with their daily functioning. The patient is willing to engage in the therapeutic work with their time and energy in the effort to move toward healing. I Also Provide Message-Based Therapy (service not covered by insurance). I have clinical experience with those who've encountered complex trauma, co-occurring mental health disorders, anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, psychosis, and others. I currently with adults. The clinical skills I bring in combination with "use of self" allows for a safe space for an individual to heal. I understand for some therapy may seem scary and uncomfortable. To open up about sometimes secret things can be nerve-racking as one is not aware of how the listener will take what is shared. That being said, in order to heal, there has to be vulnerability somewhere. Of course, this sort of relationship takes time, but it has to start somewhere.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I often use a blend of DBT skills training, family systems therapy, and solution-focused approaches, with a strong emphasis on practical communication skills and validation techniques. I highly value a sense of safety for those I meet with so that trust can be established. Through the trust, work can be done. NOTE: FOR THOSE WITH INSURANCE IN FLORIDA AND OHIO, WE WILL MEET ON THE HEADWAY PLATFORM.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After the initial intake session, I start with check-ins, review the last session, discuss a brief agenda together, and we'll do either psychoeducation, skills training, exploration, or a mix of those. I do try to tie the sessions to what someone is seeking therapy for in the first place.
