Getting to know Raelyn Legg

Thank you for considering me as your therapist. I have 15 years of experience and hold two master's degrees from Medaille University-one in Mental Health Counseling and another in Marriage and Family Therapy. My specialties include family systems, structural therapy, feminist therapy, internal family systems, CBT, emotionally focused therapy, attachment-based interventions, and psychoeducation-focused therapy. I strive to match your unique situation with the right approach to help you get the most out of our work together. Over the years, I've worked with thousands of clients, which has given me a broad base of knowledge to draw from in supporting you. I am consistent in helping people achieve meaningful results, and that remains my primary goal. While I have many specialties, including trauma, sexual issues, and anxiety, one area that particularly stands out is mental health treatment for individuals experiencing infertility, fetal loss, and mood disorders with peripartum onset. This is often a misunderstood and underserved area, and I'm glad to share my expertise with you. Additionally, I am highly skilled in fostering positive body image, processing trauma, and navigating challenges faced by the LGBT2AI+ community, including providing Gender Affirming Care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have 15 years of experience and have gotten to the level where I know enough about the field to teach therapists how to be therapists. I teach on the side of my practice which keeps me on my toes with many of the new things happening in the field. I frequently help my clients to understand some of the background of what might be going on in a very informed way. One of the benefits of having a therapist that's been doing this for a while is that I try to make the process feel lighter and more natural. I have a sense of humor which can help make some of the serious things we talk about seem more approachable and less intimidating. Feel free to be yourself whether that's serious, sarcastic, or anything else!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I'm very eclectic which makes it easy for me to meet you where you're at and what's right for you. Though some therapists may try to rush clients along, I aim to listen to your story and what it must feel for you before we make a plan, together. I have a pattern that I use to consistently get people results and it starts with sharing my expertise with you about what might be going on. We want to try to build an insight into the motivations we have underneath the surface and uncover some of the intergenerational or systemic traumas that might be there. We'll work through undoing some of these patterns by learning about how emotions work. We'll try to shift those emotions, and the relationships they bind us with, to be in alignment with our values. Sometimes it takes some investigating to figure out what our values can be and I've got a process for that too! The goal is to aim for long-lasting changes rather than patching things up. Therapy is a commitment when we're in deeper waters like this. I want you to know that I'm committed to going out there together with you if you're willing to meet me there. Making that happen successfully is going to look like our worldview changing into something positive and hopeful rather than a temporary break from the usual. We're aiming for progress that's going to stick that you can be proud of!
