Getting to know Reginald Smith

I came a looong way to meet you here. I traveled through the potholes of life—witnessing domestic violence, losing my mother as a child, growing up in four households across three states, half of which were spent in poverty. Emotional abuse and putdowns left their indelible marks that negatively impacted my career and relationships. No amount of achieving, women, or money could outrun those core emotional wounds. I ran, but I could not hide! I looked okay, but wasn’t okay, even as others thought I was totally fine. But as I rounded the rough side of the mountain, I did (and am doing) my work while discovering my purpose. That purposeful journey has led me to meet you and to help you navigate those jagged rocks of relationships, anxiety, and trauma that appear along the roadway of life. Although most of those rocks likely were not your fault, they have become your responsibility. I can help you reconnect with who you are and with whom you want to be. Don’t worry, I got you! I hold a Master’s in Counseling from Amberton University, a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, and an Associate’s degree from Dallas College. When it comes to your relationship or marriage, anxiety, stress, or depression, are you just passing the time while time is passing? Call me for a brief chat to see how I can help you get to where you want to be!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use an engaging, eclectic style of therapy, with a mixture of cognitive behavior therapy, narrative therapy, and psychodynamic approaches. I build rapport and then get to the core! I help my clients gain insight into the 'why' of 'what' is happening and help equip you with the tools to make strides towards your objectives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I get a history from my clients and gain some insight on what made them who they are today. I assess for cognitive distortions that may be getting in the way. I also use assessment as appropriate to provide additional insight into what may be influencing or causing the issue. I ask a lot of questions and educate a lot along the way. This can be in various media forms (articles, videos, podcasts). There could occasionally be role playing, practice sessions, and journalling. Ohh and I use quite a few song references and pop culture to help facilitate the learning of certain concepts :-)
