Getting to know Dr. Riley Harper

Dr. Harper works with adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, identity concerns, substance use, grief, chronic illness, and major life transitions. He supports clients who are seeking deeper self-understanding, improved emotional regulation, and more fulfilling relationships, particularly during periods of change, loss, or recovery. Therapy with Dr. Harper is collaborative, intentional, and grounded in a strong therapeutic relationship. His work integrates evidence-based and relational approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and person-centered care. Sessions focus on understanding emotional and relational patterns, clarifying values, building coping strategies, and developing greater flexibility in responding to life’s challenges. Dr. Harper brings extensive clinical experience from university counseling centers, medical and wellness settings, and community mental health. He has worked with diverse populations, including college and international students, individuals in recovery, clients facing serious medical diagnoses, and those navigating complex identity and cultural contexts. Dr. Harper approaches therapy with curiosity, compassion, and respect for each client’s lived experience, creating a space that supports insight, resilience, and meaningful, sustainable growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide psychotherapy services only and do not prescribe medication. Our first appointment is a free 15-minute call to make sure I am the right fit for you. You might be tired of feeling like you have to manage yourself all the time; talk yourself down, stay productive, keep the peace, keep it together. Many people I work with look like they’re functioning on the outside, but inside feel stuck in patterns they can’t fully explain: overthinking, people-pleasing, shutting down, feeling “too much,” or struggling to trust themselves and others. I provide trauma-informed, identity-affirming therapy rooted in psychodynamic and interpersonal process approaches. Together we’ll explore protective patterns, make sense of what you’re carrying, and practice new ways of relating that feel more connecting, honest, and secure.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I specialize working with identity and value shifts, including complicated family and/or religious experiences; as well as with the overlap of ADHD traits and emotional/relational pain like chronic overwhelm, shame, and rejection sensitivity. If my approach resonates with you and you feel like we would be a good fit then I’d love to connect!
