What should a new client know about working with you?

Getting Started With Me — What New Clients Should Know I meet you where you are. Whether you're coming in during a crisis, feeling stuck, or simply ready to make a change, there's no "right" way to start. My job is to understand your story and work with you at a pace that feels manageable and meaningful. I draw from multiple approaches. I don't believe one therapy fits everyone. Depending on what you're working through, I may use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (A.R.T.), or other evidence-based methods — always with your unique needs in mind. Faith is welcome, but never required. I'm glad to incorporate Christian counseling if that's important to you, but it's completely your choice. I work with people from all walks of life and all belief systems. I've been doing this for a long time. With over 40 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, I've had the privilege of helping people through anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, parenting struggles, relationship challenges, and more. Whatever you're carrying, you don't have to carry it alone. Your insurance likely works here. I accept most major insurance plans, including Highmark, UPMC, Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Medicaid, CHIP, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare. Private pay and out-of-network options are available as well. You can see me in person or online. I see clients at our New Brighton office and also offer telehealth appointments — whatever works best for your schedule and comfort level. This work matters to me. I founded Encourage-Ment because I believe everyone deserves access to compassionate, quality mental health care. When you walk through the door — or log on — know that I'm genuinely invested in your healing and growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My Approach to Working With You Every therapeutic relationship begins with building rapport. Before anything else, I want you to feel comfortable, heard, and safe — because real progress happens when there is genuine trust between a client and their therapist. From there, I tailor my approach based on your individual needs, drawing on the methods I am most skilled in, including ACT, A.R.T., and others, to find the right fit for what you are working through. Most clients begin with weekly sessions, and as you grow and heal, we gradually reduce the frequency of our meetings based on your progress and what feels right for you. To track how you are doing, I pay close attention to how well you are meeting the goals we set together, as well as your own sense of how things are going. When appropriate, I may also incorporate validated tools such as the GAD-7 or PHQ-9 to help us get a clearer picture of where you are and how far you have come. When the time is right, we will work together to plan for the natural conclusion of therapy. Some clients choose to continue on a maintenance basis, checking in periodically as life brings new challenges. Others reach a point where they are ready to graduate from therapy altogether — and when that happens, we will collaborate closely to make sure that transition feels intentional, empowering, and well-prepared.
