Psychotherapist
MI
Hello—I’m Robert Baptiste’ Thompson, MA, a counseling professional with 35+ years of experience helping adolescents, adults, couples, and families move through stuck patterns toward meaningful, lasting change. I’m a PhD candidate in Counseling Psychology and hold a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University. My work often centers on attachment and parent–child dynamics, relationship challenges, identity and cultural pressures, and the anxiety or depression that can accompany them. I bring a warm, steady presence and a practical, results-oriented style: we’ll map the patterns getting in your way, set clear goals, and build tools you can use between sessions. Clients tell me they appreciate my calm, direct feedback, and the space to be fully themselves while also being gently challenged to grow. Therapeutically, I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you understand how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact; Humanistic/Person-Centered approaches to ensure you’re heard and respected; and attachment-informed, culturally responsive care to honor your family story and lived context. When helpful, I integrate solution-focused, psychodynamic, and strengths-based strategies, as well as psychological testing and evaluation to guide treatment. Across my career, I’ve supported people in schools, court and justice settings, and community clinics, which has taught me to adapt care to real-life stressors and diverse backgrounds. I’m committed to collaborative planning in the first session so you leave with a clear path forward. If you’re ready to start, please use Zocdoc to book your appointment here.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients working with Robert Baptiste’ Thompson, MA can expect a grounded, collaborative, and culturally responsive therapy experience. With over 30 years of counseling experience in schools, court systems, and community programs, Robert brings deep empathy and practical insight to every session. He helps clients explore the underlying causes of their challenges—whether related to anxiety, depression, family conflict, attachment issues, or identity struggles—and works with them to create a clear, personalized treatment plan. Robert’s therapeutic approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to understand how thoughts influence emotions and behaviors, along with Humanistic and Person-Centered methods that foster a warm, supportive, and judgment-free environment. He also draws from attachment-based and culturally sensitive frameworks, recognizing how early life experiences and cultural influences shape current relationships and coping styles. Clients often describe Robert’s style as warm, patient, and structured—combining compassion with accountability. Early sessions focus on clarifying goals, identifying patterns, and building practical tools for managing emotions, improving communication, and increasing self-awareness. Many clients notice gradual relief and meaningful progress within the first few sessions as they begin to apply these tools in their daily lives. Overall, clients can expect a thoughtful, collaborative partnership that encourages personal growth, emotional insight, and lasting positive change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

hen working with clients, my process is designed to create a safe, structured, and collaborative environment where growth can unfold naturally. In our first session, we’ll focus on understanding your background, current challenges, and goals for therapy. This time is dedicated to listening and gathering important context—your story, values, and what you hope to achieve—so we can tailor treatment to your specific needs. From there, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan that outlines key areas of focus and practical steps toward progress. Each session builds on the last, helping you identify thought patterns, emotional triggers, and behavioral habits that may be keeping you stuck. I often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients recognize how their thoughts influence emotions and actions, combined with Humanistic and Person-Centered approaches that provide a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to explore deeper feelings. For clients navigating family or relationship issues, I may integrate attachment-based or structural family techniques to strengthen communication and understanding. Throughout our work, I emphasize reflection, skill-building, and real-world application. Sessions often end with a brief summary of insights gained and optional exercises or tools to practice between meetings. My goal is for every client to leave each session feeling heard, supported, and empowered with a clearer sense of direction.
