Getting to know Rory Hileman

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, a trans woman and a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Army. With these identities, I bring a unique perspective shaped by my diverse lived experiences. This perspective is central to my practice of mental health, where I work through two core lenses, Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness. My focuses are on cultural issues surrounding mental health, e.g., LGBTQIA, Veterans, Autism (Neurodiversity lens) and the intersection of these identities with trauma and different diagnoses or life events.

What should a new client know about working with you?

All are welcome! I work the most with individuals and couples that are navigating multiple intersecting identities and mental health concerns. As a trans veteran, I find it easy to connect with members of the LGBTQ and veteran communities. I can help members navigate life and the nuances that come with those identities by drawing on experience, training, and education. Clients often find that not having to explain things that feel basic really makes therapy accessible. This baseline can help the navigation of trauma and PTSD to feel less dark and lonely.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a first session I work to get to know you and learn about all the things that interact together to bring you to therapy and we collaborate to identify a path forward. The path forward often changes throughout therapy as we get to know one another and as you get comfortable and come to trust me. I believe that trust building is an integral part of the therapy process, is ongoing, and that as trust develops that the clinical picture will change with greater trust. Within this framework diagnoses serve two purposes: To communicate to your insurance that your therapy is medically necessary, and to provide a language that helps you to understand and process the struggles that you experience.
