Getting to know Ruby Akhigbe
My name is Ruby Akhigbe, Ph.D., LCSW. I have 27 years of clinical counseling experience and extensive implementation of holistic integration of biblical perspectives, as the client indicates or requests. I love the Lord and I love working with people!
I genuinely care about people and want to see everyone improve and grow in whatever area of concern presented. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” John 13:35, NIV.
My doctorate degree is in Christian Marriage and Family Counseling. I have helped many couples disrupt negative and hurtful communication patterns in order to restore the tenderness that led them to connect!
I provide individual, couples, and family counseling. I am certified in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and have applied it extensively with client’s struggling with symptoms of depression, bipolar, anxiety, panic, dysthymia, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, adjustment difficulties, and life stressors. I also have extensive training in Trauma-Focused Therapy and have applied it with clients seeking healing from acute stress symptoms or post-traumatic stress.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I am passionate about my faith in the Lord and integrating a faith perspective into sessions.
I understand what it feels like to experience anxiety, sadness, grief and loss, stressors, negative rumination, and role-overload. I have benefited greatly from counseling myself. I believe it takes courage to take the first step in pursuing help, healing, or change. I applaud you for taking this courageous step. What is your typical process for working with clients?
Clients can expect me to present myself in a genuine and approachable manner. I focus on establishing rapport and providing a safe space where clients feel comfortable letting down defenses.
Although I am certified in CBT, I use an eclectic approach. I try to avoid implementing a "cookie-cutter' or 'one size fits all' approach with clients. I believe that each clients' narrative is unique and I try to tailor my approach as best, for their particular set of circumstances.
