Getting to know Ruining (Joey) Ye

I work with individuals and couples who often feel stuck in patterns they can’t yet name — experiencing depression, anxiety, anger, or carrying the lingering effects of complex trauma. My approach is grounded in psychodynamic, humanistic, integrative, and relational frameworks. I emphasize curiosity, compassion, and evidence-based tools, while meeting you exactly where you are. My aim is to help you develop deeper self-understanding, heal old wounds, and create more authentic, fulfilling relationships — both with yourself and others.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy is most effective when you feel safe, respected, and genuinely understood. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting—we’ll explore your concerns together at a pace that feels right for you. I value honesty, curiosity, and collaboration, and I strive to create a non-judgmental space where all parts of you are welcome. Our work may involve talking through present challenges, reflecting on past experiences, or noticing patterns in how you relate to yourself and others. I welcome feedback at any point and encourage you to share what’s helpful or not, so we can adjust our approach as needed. Above all, I want therapy to be a place where you feel supported, empowered, and able to make meaningful changes in your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Intake & Goal Setting In the first one to two full sessions, we’ll explore your personal history, your current life situation, relationships, and any patterns or themes you’re noticing. Together, we’ll clarify what you want to work on—whether that’s healing from past trauma, addressing anxiety or depression, improving your self-esteem, or something else. Therapeutic Work We engage in a collaborative process that may include exploring your past (how formative experiences have shaped you), understanding relational patterns, processing emotions, and unpacking your inner world. I integrate therapeutic modalities like internal family systems (IFS), psychodynamic and relational techniques, depending on what best suits your needs. Cultural & Identity Context If applicable, we will pay attention to how your cultural background, identity, and life experiences (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, family heritage) intersect with what you’re going through. My work has particular sensitivity to East Asian cultural experiences and is inclusive of LGBTQ+ identities. Review & Growth Periodically, we’ll check in on progress toward your goals, reflect on what’s helpful and what might need adjusting, and identify new objectives as growth occurs. My hope is that over time you feel more authentic, stable, and connected—to yourself and others.
