“She was very friendly, kind, and a great listener! I am so glad to have her as a therapist especially after looking for so long for a good fit in NY because most NY therapists are not friendly like she is.”

Getting to know Ruoxi Chen

Sometimes you just want space to breathe, to speak without being rushed, to not have to explain everything right away. In therapy with me, you don’t need to have it all figured out. We slow down together. We pay attention to what’s often overlooked: the quiet pauses, the tension beneath the words, the parts of you that are asking to be heard. You may be in a place of transition or uncertainty, wondering what’s next or how to care for yourself in a more honest, sustainable way. There may not be a clear path forward yet. That’s okay. Therapy isn’t about having all the answers, but about making room to explore your questions with curiosity and care. That’s something we can do together. If you tend to feel things deeply, think a lot, and sometimes feel worn down by your own inner noise, you’re not alone. We can look at patterns that keep you stuck, soften your relationship with yourself, and build more steadiness in how you move through the world. My background includes CBT, REBT, and psychodynamic training. But at the heart of it, our work is relational. It’s thoughtful, collaborative, and guided by what matters most to you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy looks different for everyone, but with me, it usually starts by slowing down and getting curious about how you see the world—and yourself. I don’t rush to offer advice or tools right away. I rarely assign formal homework (and no worries if you don’t get to it!). Sometimes, I might gently invite you to notice things between sessions. My approach is thoughtful, collaborative, and warm. I work best with clients who are open to exploring, even if they’re not quite sure where to begin.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I don’t believe therapy always needs to be “deep” to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s not about unraveling childhood wounds or chasing breakthroughs—but about having someone who listens, reflects, and helps you make sense of a regular Tuesday afternoon. More importantly, it’s about giving yourself that time—uninterrupted, intentional—to just be with yourself. I think therapy can be ordinary in the best way: steady, human, and quietly transformative.

she’s really great, attentive and a great listener!

Before someone decides for you, ask questions about the type of service you want. I have more regrets than solutions, having Dr. Ruoxi Chen help me with mental health issues. Not every client is the same; an immigrant from a different race, particularly, threw off connecting to comprehend. I tried utilizing dictionary meanings to clarify our session, but contradictions became consistent without having a middle ground of understanding. Dr. Chen is a good listener and typically by the book issues she thrives at, but ask a direct question, such as Chen calls it a progress report, will give a termination, cause it makes her uncomfortable. Dr Chen has time to grow and gain experience servicing a diverse group of people who are unsure of everything completely for themselves. Still, communicating with intellect directly or asking a question without a grey area, one time showed it's too much mentally and emotionally. That will lead her to terminate your sessions permanently.

It was ok, I saw her for just the first time, so that's not enough to make an accurate determination, more sessions will be needed for me to make a fair assessment of this providers abilities etc
