Psychotherapist
MI
I am Ruth Westfall, a licensed Social Worker with nearly 30 years of experience as a therapist. I am passionate about getting to know my clients and supporting them as they heal and overcome life’s challenges. I have the greatest respect for those who seek support to make positive changes in their lives. My approach depends on each client’s needs and preferences, but most importantly, it is trauma-informed. I draw on skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Positive Psychology. I embrace a holistic approach and work with clients to develop self-care, communication, and stress-coping skills that fit their lives—even after they have reached their therapy goals. In recent years, Anxiety and Depression have increased by 25%, so many of the people I work with experience related symptoms. I have extensive experience working with trauma and its many effects. I prefer to work with individual clients, especially through telehealth. My communication style is calm and compassionate. Sessions tend to be relaxed and somewhat casual because I want our time together to be a safe space where you feel comfortable discussing anything. I also provide psychoeducational resources and worksheets for use between appointments. And one of the perks of virtual therapy—I’d love to meet your pets! My journey to mental healthcare began as a single parent needing a career that could support my son and me. I was always drawn to a helping profession and one that aligned with my passion for social justice. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Western Michigan University in 1995 and immediately began working at a mental health clinic. Over 24 years there, I served in various roles—not only as a therapist but also as an advocate for victims.
