Getting to know Ryan Roels

As a Columbia University-trained therapist with lived experience growing up across diverse cultural, racial, linguistic, and religious backgrounds, I work with adolescents, emerging adults, and adults to cultivate deeper self-insight, strengthen self-compassion, and pursue the goals that bring them to therapy. I also work with families, drawing on my experience as a New York City social worker to help improve communication, resolve conflict, and address behavioral challenges. Specialties include: - Identity development in diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic contexts - Performance anxiety and perfectionism - Family communication and interpersonal conflict Therapy modalities used: Psychodynamic therapy, relational therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, play therapy, and mindfulness Thank you for considering therapy and taking this meaningful step towards finding the right fit. Beginning this journey takes courage, and I’m glad you’re here!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a client-centered, relational, and integrative approach to therapy, focusing on building strong therapeutic relationships. Drawing on training in psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, family therapy, and play therapy, I supports clients in exploring identity, processing trauma, and learning to manage emotions and relationships with clarity and authenticity. I work with patience, sincerity, and humor to build a strong therapeutic relationship— what I see as the foundation for lasting change. My approach is grounded in research on effective therapy and inspired by values of compassion and empowerment. These values were shaped by transformative experiences: living in diverse environments, navigating spirituality, and working through complex trauma with a deep respect for human resilience. We are all capable of immense growth. Witnessing it is inspiring; experiencing it is revolutionary.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our sessions, you can expect a blend of purposeful conversation and reflective exploration. I’ll ask thoughtful questions, and you’ll have space to feel, think, and respond. Together, we’ll observe recurring patterns, themes, and body language, then integrate these insights into your self-understanding. When working with families or couples, I begin by observing interactions in the room. I share reflections and introduce new perspectives while guiding you through tasks that align with your goals. Whether individually or in groups, therapy often brings a wide range of emotions: some familiar, others new. This is a natural part of the process and often a sign that meaningful work is happening. I’ll support you in recognizing, holding, and working through these emotions. Clients often report feeling relieved, grounded, hopeful, empowered, and grateful. Families I work with frequently notice less conflict, stronger communication, and more connected daily interactions. I hope you’ll experience these benefits too.

Ryan was very good with our daughter. She is very shy and took to him easily. We look forward to working with him in the future to help us more.

Ryan has a special gift for supporting clients struggling with substance use. He approaches recovery with compassion and without judgment, helping clients find practical strategies and renewed hope for lasting change.
Ryan is an incredibly compassionate therapist. He has a natural ability to make me feel seen and understood, while also gently challenging me to grow. His calm and grounded presence creates a safe space where I can share openly and work through difficult emotions.
Ryan brings both expertise and heart to his work as a therapist. He combines evidence-based approaches with genuine empathy, helping clients build stronger coping skills and deepen their self-understanding. We’ve seen remarkable outcomes with our teenage son who works with him for 2 months now.
I used to dread speaking up in class or even hanging out with friends. I felt like everyone was judging me, and I just wanted to disappear. Working with Ryan has been a game changer. He helped me unpack where those fears came from and showed me how to challenge them without shutting down. I’m not hiding anymore—I’m learning to show up.
I came to therapy constantly on edge—overthinking every decision, worrying about things I couldn’t control, and feeling like I was failing at life. Ryan helped me understand how my anxiety was showing up and why it felt so overwhelming. He didn’t just give me coping tools—he helped me reconnect with myself. I’m not ‘cured,’ but I finally feel like I have a handle on it.
Great experience. Highly recommend!
When I first started therapy with Ryan, I didn’t realize how much time I was spending online to avoid how I felt. He helped me get curious about the ‘why’ behind my habits instead of just trying to force change. With his support, I’ve found healthier ways to cope and feel more connected to the world around me again.
I used to feel like I was never good enough—no matter how hard I worked or how well I did. Ryan helped me understand where that pressure was coming from and how to deal with it in healthier ways. I’ve learned how to be kinder to myself and stop spiraling when things don’t go perfectly.
I always felt like if I wasn’t the best at everything, I was failing. It was exhausting. Ryan helped me slow down and understand where that pressure was coming from. Therapy gave me the space to breathe and start being kinder to myself. I’m still ambitious—but I’m no longer driven by fear.
As someone who grew up between two cultures, I always felt like I didn’t fully belong anywhere. Ryan helped me unpack a lot of those complicated feelings without making me choose sides. Therapy with him has helped me feel more grounded in who I am and more confident in how I move through the world.
We brought our teenage son to see Ryan after months of tension and blow-ups at home. Ryan was incredibly patient and helped our son feel respected and heard. He also gave us tools as parents to better understand and support him. It hasn’t been easy, but we’re finally working together instead of against each other.
My son had been shutting down emotionally and avoiding social situations. It was heartbreaking to see him so withdrawn. Ryan was exactly the kind of therapist we needed—calm, nonjudgmental, and able to connect with him in a way no one else had. Week by week, our son started opening up and finding his voice. Now he’s more confident, more connected, and even looking forward to things again.
Great 1st session! I'm motivated to come back
Ryan helped me untangle a lot of pain I’d carried for years around my identity and my relationship with substances. As someone mixed-race, it’s hard to find someone who really gets the complexity of it all, but Ryan did. Therapy with him has been one of the most freeing experiences of my life.
I had been stuck in a deep rut for months—feeling numb, unmotivated, and like I was just going through the motions. Ryan created a space where I could talk honestly without feeling weak or judged. He helped me make sense of what I was feeling and start to reconnect with the things that mattered to me. I’m not just surviving anymore—I’m finally starting to live again.
