Ryn Thelen, LPC

Psychotherapist
155 N. Michigan Ave, Ste. 201, Chicago, IL
My journey to becoming a therapist has had many twists and turns. Originally, I was planning on a very different career and had a clear vision for the path I thought I would take. When those plans shifted, I experienced firsthand what it’s like to have goals change and to navigate the uncertainty that can come with life transitions. Along the way, I found myself in therapy, which proved to be a life-changing experience. Through that process, I began to recognize that the very parts of me that shaped my earlier path, including my curiosity about people, desire for meaning, and openness to growth, were also what could make me an effective therapist. For the first time, my work felt deeply aligned with who I am. Because of these experiences, I know how challenging it can be to try new things and step outside of your comfort zone. My hope as a therapist is to create a supportive space where you can explore your own path and take hold of the transformations that matter most to you, whether in career, relationships, identity, or overall life satisfaction.

Getting to know Ryn Thelen

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with adolescents and adults from a variety of backgrounds who are navigating life’s challenges, including trauma, dissociation, anxiety, major life transitions, and questions about identity, purpose, or belonging. I also support people who face the emotional weight of activism or advocacy and the barriers that can come with caring deeply about social change. As a queer and gender-expansive therapist, my own experiences of feeling “othered” or overlooked inform how I bring empathy, understanding, and affirmation to every client. My approach is trauma-informed and client-led, emphasizing pacing and creating a safe, supportive space where you can process difficult experiences and make room for hope, growth, and healing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Working with me is like walking into your favorite coffee shop, a familiar, comforting presence where you can get what you need. That might mean therapeutic support, confidence-building, challenging unhelpful patterns, or simply getting the work done. Each session, I meet you where you are and help highlight patterns that can bring new insight and understanding. I draw from psychoanalytic, existential, and person-centered approaches as guideposts, tailoring our work to your needs and goals. I also recognize the harm the mental health field has caused marginalized communities, and I am committed to practicing in anti-racist, decolonizing, and culturally responsive ways. Ultimately, my focus is on supporting you in reaching your goals, whether that means finding relief from distress, gaining clarity, or making meaningful change in your life. My hope is to create a space where you feel seen, supported, and empowered to explore, grow, and move toward the life you want.
