Getting to know Sally Jordan Austin

Hi there, I'm Sally Jordan Austin! I have practiced Marriage and Family Therapy for 17 years. My approach to therapy is adapted to the individual and their life experience when they enter therapy. Generally speaking, I take a person-centered approach while drawing upon a range of techniques and theories. I have assisted people with mood disorders, helped individuals and couples create more fulfilling relationships, and facilitated individuals in finding solutions to their problems. I hold a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, which has enriched my understanding of human behavior and therapeutic techniques. My approach begins with person-centered and humanistic methods, including Gestalt and Narrative therapy. I also draw upon many other theoretical approaches such as psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory (how early attachments impact present relationships), transactional analysis (how we relate as child, adult, or parent in interactions), spiritual psychology, and cognitive behavioral therapy. I typically work with individuals and couples but have also supported families, adolescents, and children. My experience includes extensive work with mood disorders—depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder—as well as treating PTSD and OCD. I also assist couples and individuals with relationship issues. I take an informal approach to therapy, seeing clients as having their own wisdom while recognizing they come to therapy for professional insight, direction, and guidance. I am friendly, approachable, and create a comfortable, safe environment. I also recognize that humor can be a helpful part of therapy. My journey to mental healthcare began in my early 20s, volunteering and working in psychology and social services—as a volunteer with special needs children at a playgroup, a companion to the elderly, and a residential caseworker for the severely mentally ill.

Sally has brought me out of a dark place. It’s been almost two years since we began working together and the progress is amazing!
Sally is wonderful! Very smart, great listener, gives great advice, and pulls no punches! And she has a great sense of humor! I'm very happy to talk to her and always feel like we accomplish something, and laugh a lot along the way!
Sally has years of experience and you can tell in the way she does therapy. She listens well, guiding or prompting you if you need in your conversation flow and the things you want to bring up/ may be struggling with. Her experience with certain types of mental health struggles and how they affect siblings and family members has been really supportive for me. She has helped me navigate some of those complex family “things.” I highly recommend her.
