Getting to know Samuel Anthony

A core tenet of psychotherapy is that there is far more to our emotional lives than we are aware of, and these blind spots make our understanding of our problems incomplete. Although we do the best we can, being a person in the world can still be quite hard: we face interpersonal adversity, internal struggle, and unexpected obstacles. A deeper understanding and emotional connection to ourselves better equips us to resolve problems and to cope with the inevitable bumps and bruises that come with being human. Together, you and I will work in detail to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. We will focus on how the past and present intersect and contribute to current challenges. Change, like learning, comes in its own time; this work can be very challenging and requires curiosity, empathy, patience, and a sense of humor. Starting therapy is a courageous act, and creating a space for change can be difficult, but growth can take hold in surprising ways. Ultimately, people find that the rewards of this work far outweigh the difficulties. I hold a Master's in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and completed a Fellowship in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the Karen Horney Clinic, training that informs my compassionate and thoughtful approach to therapy.
