Samuel Malebranche, LMSW

Psychotherapist
401 Franklin Ave, Ste 301, Garden City, NY
Sam Malebranche, LMSW, J.D. earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Fordham University. Prior to becoming a therapist, he completed New York Law School’s Two-Year Honors Program and spent several years in public service as an attorney. His experience working alongside people during periods of stress, uncertainty, and significant life challenges inspired his transition into psychotherapy. Sam works with emerging adults and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation, identity development, and life transitions. He believes therapy is most helpful when clients feel met where they are, never rushed, and accompanied as they explore their own experience. Sam’s approach draws from both cognitive and somatic perspectives and is informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Polyvagal Theory, emerging training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and other somatic approaches. Inspired by Hakomi psychotherapy, Sam views therapy as assisted self-study. He believes our thoughts, emotions, and physical experiences are inextricably interconnected, and invites clients to explore each as meaningful sources of information. Whether someone is reconnecting with themselves or learning to connect with themselves for the first time, he creates a therapeutic space that supports further self-understanding and growth toward a life that feels more fully their own.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is primarily conversational. I'd like to learn the language of you, and that includes learning how you show up in the world. We explore how you experience and relate to your experiences, which includes your thoughts, emotions, body, and relationships with others. Together, we explore what brings you to therapy, how your history is alive in the you-of-today, and what possibilities may unfold moving forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each session is an opportunity to explore what feels important to bring into the room. Since our lives are full of open tabs, we make space for curiosity and reflection as we notice what emerges, resonates, and may need attention. We may also revisit themes from previous sessions or explore what has come up since we last met. Like going to the gym, the time we spend together is one part of the process. If it feels useful, we can explore practices or reflections to carry into the space between sessions.
