I am Sandra (Sandy) Quaife, LMHC, and as a therapist, I mainly see myself as an emotional catalyst. In a chemical process, a catalyst allows or speeds up a reaction without being consumed. Similarly, my role is to help clients identify what they want to accomplish in therapy and support them in finding ways to meet their own goals. You will not hear me telling you what you "should" do in your life. Instead, I hold up a mirror so you can see what you are doing and decide if you want to continue on that path. Everything else is just details. I earned my Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University. My clinical approach usually includes elements from three main theoretical backgrounds. My original training was cognitive behavioral from the perspective of Rational Emotive Therapy (Albert Ellis). I later added Dialectical Behavioral Therapy training and began by teaching clients to manage their present emotional challenges more effectively using several cognitive skills. As therapy progresses, we often discover that "the past is not really all past," and I use concepts from developmental theory (Erik Erikson) to help clients understand how unmet developmental needs from early childhood to the present may impact their current perceptions and behaviors. When relevant, I incorporate 12-step recovery concepts to address codependency, emotional reactivity, and substance abuse. I have worked as a therapist in various settings, and both my colleagues and I have observed that I tend to attract and effectively work with clients who are more "unconventional" in some way. I accept people as they are and do not try to "put them into a box" that others may want for them. Much of my earlier career was spent working with older adolescents placed in residential settings.
