Getting to know Sandra (Sandy) Gartin

I am a Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in California and New York. I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Connecticut and my Master's Degree in Psychology from Phillips Graduate University in Los Angeles. For many years, as a television network executive and a Film and TV Executive Producer, I managed a wide range of personalities and developed a unique awareness of how stress manifests in various symptoms for many people. Relationship issues, anxiety, depression, insecurities, and other challenges often interfered with job performance. This inspired me to change direction, return to graduate school, and earn my Master's in Psychology. With a strong sense of empathy, I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, tailoring treatment to each person's unique and specific needs. I believe that early trauma often underlies many of the challenges people face throughout their lives. Using my psychodynamic foundation and EMDR therapy, I help clients achieve healing in less time than traditional talk therapy. I also incorporate several other modalities to address each individual's distinct needs. It takes courage to take the first step toward a more fulfilling life. I am here to support and empower you on that journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Since I see patients only virtually I want to assure you that I have found all modalities I use via teletherapy work as well as in-person does. I follow a Psychodynamic path which focuses on insight into one's emotions and thinking as well as their relationship with others. I specialize in EMDR, which gets to the origin and core of how the problem(s) began, usually some trauma was experienced. It aims to desensitize, relieve and resolve unconscious memories with their accompanying emotions that interfere with one's relationships, feelings about oneself and quality of life. I incorporate several modalities including Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems and Cognitive Behavioral therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During a first session I usually explain how I work and answer any questions the patient might have. I begin taking a complete history. During this time and discussion the patient and I get an idea about whether we are a "good fit." Many of the patient's issues will come to light during the history taking, as well as the patient's strengths and weaknesses. By the end of the first session we should have an idea if the patient wants to continue and I will discuss the treatment plan and respond to any further questions the patient might have.
