What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a psychodynamic and narrative approach to my counseling approach. Basically this means that clients who work best with me are looking to resolve negative self views and/or negative viewpoints about the world that have been developed through life experiences. We talk about present day challenges and then make connections to other times in life that could be informing the present. Although healthy coping is a big part of feeling better, many of my clients are living relatively healthy lives and not sure why they continue to feel anxious, depressed, off, etc. The work that we do together often makes lasting impact in how they view themselves and the world in a healthy way! When working with couples I use the above approach but am also informed by the research from the Gottman's. I am currently in training through their program. Finally, trauma is a specialty of mine for both individual and couples counseling. Although there is no one set pathway on how to treat trauma, I will often use a combination of Cognitive Processing Therapy and titrated trauma exposure.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is the intake appointment which is a standard appointment (around 45-50 minutes) for us to get to know each other. I will get more information on what is brining you to my office and your history. Together we will talk about potential treatment goals and course of actions. Every session after is a 45-50 minute counseling appointment using mostly talk therapy. You will come in and give me an update on how things have been since we last met, and I do my job of helping you build insight and feel better! Clients typically do best meeting more regularly up front (one a week or once every two weeks depending on clinical need/preference) for a few months. Then we will usually start to space sessions out more to give you a chance to apply what you are learning between sessions. It is important to know that there is no one answer to how long a person will need counseling treatment. It depends on a variety of influences such as presenting problem, motivation, history, etc.
