Sara Hertzberg, LMFT

Psychotherapist
4255 18th St, San Francisco, CA
I am a psychotherapist in San Francisco working with individuals and couples moving through significant transitions: deciding whether to marry or have children, renegotiating a relationship, or coming into a fuller sense of themselves. Many of the people I see are queer women in their late twenties and thirties who have done therapy before and are ready to go deeper, along with couples navigating questions of commitment, family, and non-monogamy. My work is relational and somatic, grounded in transpersonal and depth psychology, which means we attend to the body and the nervous system as much as to insight. I draw on EFT, IFS, and the Gottman method, informed by a background in performing arts, sexuality education, and mindfulness. Together we make room for clearer communication, deeper intimacy, and a more embodied way of living. I offer a free consultation to begin.

Getting to know Sara Hertzberg

I am a psychotherapist in San Francisco working with individuals and couples moving through significant transitions: deciding whether to marry or have children, renegotiating a relationship, or coming into a fuller sense of themselves. Many of the people I see are queer women in their late twenties and thirties who have done therapy before and are ready to go deeper, along with couples navigating questions of commitment, family, and non-monogamy. My work is relational and somatic, grounded in transpersonal and depth psychology, which means we attend to the body and the nervous system as much as to insight. Together we make room for clearer communication, deeper intimacy, and a more embodied way of living. I offer a free consultation to begin.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Most of my clients have been to therapy before and want something more embodied and less surface-level than they have had in the past. I work somatically and relationally, so alongside talking we pay attention to what is happening in your body and in the patterns of your relationships. I am direct, warm, and difficult to shock, and I am genuinely affirming of queer, trans, and non-monogamous clients, of kink communities, and of culturally Jewish clients. I see individuals and couples in person in San Francisco and online throughout California. For those exploring altered states, I also offer psychedelic preparation and integration. You do not need to arrive with the language already worked out; we build it together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin with a free consultation to make sure we are a good fit, since the relationship itself is what makes the work possible. Early on, we map your history, your relationships, and what you are moving toward, whether that is a decision about marriage or children, a shift in how you relate to your body, or a question your partnership is holding. From there, sessions blend reflection, somatic and emotional exploration, and concrete tools drawn from EFT, IFS, Gottman, and depth and transpersonal approaches. With couples, we slow down the cycles that keep you stuck and build more honest, more flexible ways of connecting. The pace is yours. Areas I work with often include relationships and communication, sex and intimacy, non-monogamy, queer and LGBTQ+ identity, life transitions, anxiety, adult ADHD, intergenerational trauma, and Jewish culture.
