I’m Sara Tarullo, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s in Clinical Social Work from Stony Brook University. I specialize in working with adoptive parents, families, teens, and older adults. As an adoptive and foster mother, I deeply understand the complexities of trauma, neglect, and their lasting impact on children, teens, and adults. My personal experiences with children from difficult backgrounds allow me to empathize with the unique challenges families face. I believe that, despite trauma being debilitating, with the right guidance and support, children and adults can heal and thrive. My own children, despite challenging behaviors, are incredible individuals—insightful, engaging, and natural leaders. They remind me of the strength and potential within every person, regardless of their past. I’m grateful to work with individuals who have overcome difficult times, helping them uncover strengths, embrace resilience, and move toward their goals. With over 15 years of clinical experience, including 10 years as a middle school social worker and 5 years in non-profits providing individual, group, and family therapy, I have experience with people from diverse backgrounds. This has given me a comprehensive understanding of struggles in families, especially those navigating trauma and transitions. I am committed to helping you through life’s challenges, guiding you toward healing and growth. My approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that each person has the capacity for growth and healing. I strive to create a safe, empathetic space where you feel seen, heard, and understood. Together, we will identify challenges, understand underlying causes, and develop tools to move toward healing and growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is collaborative, empathetic, and strength-based. I believe that each person has the potential for growth and healing, regardless of their past experiences. Therapy is a partnership, where I work alongside you to help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a safe and non-judgmental space. Together, we will identify the challenges you are facing, understand their underlying causes, and build on your strengths to create meaningful change. I draw from several therapeutic modalities to tailor my approach to meet your unique needs. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Psychodynamic Therapy. My goal is to help you develop practical tools to manage life’s difficulties while also fostering a deeper understanding of yourself. Whether you are navigating trauma, managing family dynamics, or exploring life transitions, I will be here to provide support that empowers you to move forward with greater clarity, resilience, and peace. Above all, I approach therapy with curiosity, empathy, and a deep respect for your individuality. Healing happens when we can acknowledge our struggles while also honoring the strengths and resources that we already possess.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Clients can expect to take away a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships, and their challenges. Through our work together, I hope to help you gain valuable tools to navigate life’s difficulties, manage difficult emotions, and build healthier, more fulfilling connections. You can expect to leave each session with practical strategies and coping mechanisms that you can apply to your everyday life. In addition to practical tools, you will also gain a sense of empowerment as you recognize your own strengths and resilience. I believe that everyone has the potential to heal and grow, and my goal is to help you discover and cultivate that potential. By exploring your experiences in a safe and supportive space, you can expect to develop a stronger sense of self-awareness, self-compassion, and clarity in how you move forward in life. Ultimately, clients can expect to feel heard, validated, and understood. My hope is that by the end of our work together, you will feel more equipped to face challenges, embrace change, and live in alignment with your authentic self.
