"In my work with clients, I’m often amazed at the burdens people can carry and keep going. But as strong as most people are, almost everyone is familiar with the feeling that some part of their strategy for living isn’t working anymore. Many different situations can act as indicator lights that some part of your life needs your attention. Whether this is something external like a failing relationship or something internal like a growing feeling of emptiness, the bottom line is that you know within yourself that something needs to change. I think of counseling as a series of productive conversations focused on who you are, the problems you’re experiencing, and the parts of those problems which are within your power to change. This process takes courage and vulnerability, and it can’t happen without a trusting relationship with a counselor. It's my job to create that accepting environment with you. I approach counseling with a combination of two primary techniques: Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT allows us to step back from your life and view it objectively - what are all the moving parts, and where is the machine malfunctioning? Psychodynamic theory focuses on the specifics of you - who you are now and how you evolved into your current worldview, beliefs, and patterns. Between these two viewpoints - the micro and the macro; the emotional and the factual - we discover your power and opportunities to change. I grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, OH and got my undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York City in 2003. I spent the next ten years living in different cities, doing different jobs, and learning about the world and myself. I was a sailor in the Merchant Marine, a waitress in Georgia, and a bartender in New Orleans, among other things, before I finally realized that I was meant to be a counselor.
