Sarah Donohue, LCSW

Psychotherapist
213 W. Institute Pl., Suite 500, Chicago, IL
Throughout my years as a therapist, I have learned what it truly means to walk alongside someone in their darkest moments. I approach my work through a psychodynamic and relational lens, believing that in order to alleviate our symptoms, we must understand the deeper experiences that shaped them. By exploring earlier relationships and attachment patterns, we can begin to understand what brought you here and develop a stronger, more compassionate relationship with yourself. I am passionate about viewing each client holistically. Together, we will look at how your past experiences influence your present thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Healing often happens within the therapeutic relationship, where insight, trust, and new patterns can begin to emerge. I also value collaboration and often work alongside a client’s broader support team when helpful, whether that includes psychiatry, primary care, dietitians, or other providers. In my practice, I provide individual psychotherapy to adults ages 21–45 navigating mood disorders, relationship stressors, unresolved childhood trauma, and life transitions. I also regularly work with clients around men’s and women’s health concerns, family conflict, and work-related stress. My goal is to help you better understand yourself, shift unhelpful patterns, and feel more grounded in your day-to-day life.

Getting to know Sarah Donohue

What should a new client know about working with you?

You may benefit from working with me if you often find yourself wondering “Why do I keep ending up in the same patterns?” — whether in relationships, work, or how you relate to yourself. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed by their emotions, or frustrated by patterns they don’t fully understand. In our work together, we take the time to explore how your past experiences and relationships may be shaping your present life. Through a psychodynamic and relational approach, we focus on building insight, developing self-compassion, and creating space for meaningful change. Clients often describe our work as thoughtful, collaborative, and deeply reflective. Therapy is a place where you can speak openly, slow down, and better understand yourself. Over time, this insight can help you shift unhelpful patterns, strengthen your relationships, and feel more grounded in your day-to-day life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with an initial assessment where we spend time getting to know one another. I'll ask questions to understand your history and what brings you to therapy. We'll also discuss your goals and intentions for starting therapy. We'll go over cost, scheduling, ways to communicate, and more.
