Getting to know Sarah Polak

Hello, my name is Sarah. I am a compassionate and experienced clinician and domestic violence professional with a Master’s in Clinical Counseling Psychology from Roosevelt University. I provide support and guidance to individuals facing a wide spectrum of challenges. My experience extends to helping clients manage mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. I have worked extensively with individuals with autism and specialize in understanding the unique needs of neurodiverse individuals. I also assist those grappling with low self-esteem, difficulty balancing work and personal life, and feelings of hopelessness or suicidal ideation. In sessions, I utilize a range of evidence-based techniques to empower clients. These include relaxation exercises to reduce stress, setting realistic goals and boundaries to foster a sense of control, and teaching effective coping strategies to navigate daily challenges. By helping clients gain a clearer understanding of themselves, they can achieve personal growth, resilience, and a stronger sense of identity. I work as an ally to create a safe and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, ensuring they feel supported, valued, and free to discuss their struggles without fear of judgment. I am deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and understanding in every therapeutic interaction, helping clients feel empowered to overcome adversity and thrive. Whether addressing the aftermath of trauma, supporting individuals through emotional regulation, or guiding clients toward healthier relationships and self-perception, my approach is rooted in empathy, respect, and a dedication to improving overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In therapy sessions, I utilize a range of evidence-based techniques to empower clients. These include relaxation exercises to help manage stress and anxiety, promotion emotional well-being. I also work collaboratively with clients to set realistic and achievable goals, empowering them to take active steps toward positive change. I incorporate trauma-informed, person-centered, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in sessions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the initial intake session, I gather comprehensive background information to gain a deeper understanding of the client's concerns and the extent of their presenting issues. Using this insight, I collaborate with the client to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs and goals. Throughout the therapeutic process, I ensure clarity, regularly check in to track progress, and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed, fostering a flexible and supportive approach to healing.
