Sarah Refvem, LPC

Sarah Refvem, LPC

Psychotherapist
LA
I offer relational narrative-somatic psychotherapy for adults who recognize that the ways they learned to survive may no longer allow them to fully live. By exploring how experience is carried through mind, body, story, and relationship, therapy creates the conditions for protective patterns to become more flexible and new possibilities to emerge. You will be supported in reconnecting with yourself, developing embodied agency, and carrying greater freedom, connection, and aliveness into your everyday life. My practice integrates narrative therapy, somatic psychotherapy, mindfulness, and evidence-based care. I hold master’s degrees in public health and counseling, and my work is informed by advanced training in trauma, nervous system regulation, meditation, and Yoga Nidra. I have a particular interest in supporting veterans, caregivers, and trauma survivors.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy should be more than a place to cope. It should be a place where lasting change becomes possible. My role is not to tell you who you are, but to listen carefully, notice patterns that may be difficult to see from the inside, and create a space where your experiences can be explored with curiosity, respect, and compassion. Many of the people I work with have spent years adapting to difficult circumstances, becoming experts at caring for others, or carrying burdens they rarely speak about. You do not have to hide these parts of yourself, and you do not have to force them to change. In a therapeutic relationship where you feel deeply seen, we can approach them with curiosity, honor the intelligence within them, and listen for what may be ready to move. My training and clinical experience guide the process, but your wisdom, values, and lived experience remain at its center.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is a chance for us to begin getting to know one another. You’ll have space to ask questions, share what is bringing you to therapy, and explore what you hope for from the process. We’ll also establish some of the structure for our work so that, moving forward, we can focus on what matters most: you. In our ongoing work, I often use creative questions and gentle invitations to shift perspective, notice what is happening in the body, or deepen our experience of the conversation. Over time, clients may develop greater awareness, self-compassion, and more freedom in how they respond to life’s challenges. I typically work with clients for at least six months, though the length of therapy depends on your needs, goals, and circumstances. We’ll revisit the direction of our work together as it unfolds.

More information on payments and coverage

I currently accept commercial insurance plans in Louisiana processed securely through Headway. For Virginia clients, my insurance credentialing is actively forthcoming. In the meantime, I accept out-of-network and private pay options. If using insurance, you will receive an email invitation from Headway within 24 hours after booking. Please securely upload your insurance and card details through that link prior to our session so Headway can verify your exact copay or deductible. I offer direct private pay options if you do not have a covered plan. A sliding scale tier is available for clients requiring financial flexibility. If you wish to utilize out-of-network benefits, I can provide a monthly clinical receipt (superbill) for you to submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. Navigating fees should not stand in the way of care. If you have any questions about rates, insurance setup, or sliding scale availability, please reach out!
