Getting to know Sarah Seymour

I am committed to creating a supportive, respectful, and collaborative therapeutic environment where children, adolescents, young adults, and families feel comfortable exploring emotions, behaviors, relationships, and life experiences. My clinical focus is working with children and youth, ages 2 through 20, and I strive to provide age-appropriate, compassionate care that helps each patient feel heard, understood, and supported. I believe each individual is the expert in their own life, and I use a strength-based, person-centered approach to help patients build insight, develop coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and work toward meaningful change. When working with younger children, I incorporate developmentally appropriate interventions and collaborate with caregivers to support growth both in and outside of sessions. My approach integrates evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, and supportive psychotherapy. I work with children, teens, and young adults navigating anxiety, stress, behavioral concerns, life transitions, family and peer relationships, school-related challenges, self-esteem, and personal growth. My clinical experience includes outpatient mental health settings, community-based work, and collaboration with diverse populations. As a doctoral student in Pace University’s Mental Health Counseling PhD program, I continue to expand my clinical knowledge through advanced training, research, and ongoing professional development. I believe progress often happens through small, consistent steps. My goal is to provide a safe and encouraging space where patients can build resilience, strengthen coping skills, improve self-understanding, and feel empowered as they grow into the best version of themselves.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When working with me, clients can expect a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where they feel heard, respected, and understood. I recognize that beginning therapy can feel unfamiliar, especially for children, adolescents, young adults, and families, so I focus on creating a safe and comfortable environment where trust can develop over time. My clinical focus is working with children and youth, ages 2 through 20. I tailor my approach based on each client’s age, developmental needs, personality, and goals. For younger children, I often incorporate developmentally appropriate interventions and collaborate with parents or caregivers to support progress outside of sessions. For teens and young adults, I provide a space to explore emotions, relationships, school stress, identity, life transitions, and personal growth. My approach is person-centered and strength-based, meaning I view each client as capable, resilient, and the expert in their own experience. I work collaboratively with clients and families to better understand challenges, identify patterns, build coping skills, and develop practical strategies that support meaningful change. In sessions, clients can expect thoughtful conversation, guided reflection, emotional support, and skill-building tailored to their individual needs. I believe progress happens through small, consistent steps, and my goal is to help each client feel supported, empowered, and better equipped to manage life’s challenges.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with an initial intake session where I take time to understand the child’s needs, current concerns, developmental history, family background, school functioning, and treatment goals. When working with children and adolescents, I believe it is important to collaborate with parents or caregivers while also creating a space where the child or teen feels comfortable, respected, and supported. For younger children, therapy may include developmentally appropriate interventions, play-based techniques, emotional identification, coping skills, behavior support, and parent/caregiver collaboration. For adolescents and young adults, sessions may focus more on emotional expression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, school or social challenges, family relationships, communication, life transitions, and building healthy coping strategies. In ongoing sessions, I work collaboratively with each client and family to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and patterns that may be impacting daily functioning. My approach is person-centered, strength-based, and supportive, while integrating evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Sessions are tailored to the client’s age, personality, needs, and goals. I regularly check in on progress and adjust the therapeutic approach as needed to ensure treatment remains helpful, realistic, and aligned with the client and family’s needs. My goal is to provide a warm, safe, and nonjudgmental environment where children, teens, and young adults can build coping skills, increase confidence, improve emotional regulation, and feel supported as they grow.
