Sarah Vanderzanden, LCSW

Psychotherapist
TX
Hi there, I'm Sarah! Hello! My name is Dr. Sarah VanderZanden, PhD, and I am a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in couples counseling, military/veteran issues, PTSD/moral injury, as well as addiction. I earned my Master?s in Social Work from UT Health San Antonio | University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. I am well versed in CBT and CPT and describe myself as a systems perspective therapist. My approach to therapy is dynamic and focuses on integrative, holistic, and cognitive methods that help patients make rational choices and understand the difference between normal and abnormal behaviors. My approach I approach therapy from a psychoanalytic foundation that focuses on uncovering unconscious motivations and meanings behind behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. I also incorporate a humanistic perspective that emphasizes the patient?s right to make sound decisions for themselves and feel comfortable developing into their full potential. My focus I typically work with clients over the age of 25. I work with all types of couples: monogamous, polyamorous, separated, divorced, dating, etc. I also work with clients who have identified with and served in the military, both active duty and veterans. I specialize in treating PTSD and moral injury. Additionally, I have an extensive background in addiction medicine, including drugs, alcohol, sex, and gambling. My communication style I consider myself up-front, energetic, and straightforward. As an active duty service member, I spend much of my time breaking down therapeutic dynamics for high-ranking personnel with strong goals and limited time. I inform my patients that working with me will be like taking a driver?s ed course?you are the primary driver, but as the road instructor, I always have access to the brakes. We can travel anywhere you want on your path. I will not make decisions for you, but I will challenge your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs as we navigate the journey together.
