Psychotherapist
IL
I'm Sarah Cheung, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and founder of SonderGrace Counseling PLLC. I provide telehealth therapy to clients across Illinois, helping people navigate life's transitions — starting college or graduate school, becoming a parent, or finding your footing as a young adult. Many of my clients are working through anxiety, depression, burnout, or identity questions alongside those changes. I have a special heart for college and graduate students, new and expecting moms, and young adults. As an Asian American therapist, I bring a deep understanding of the cultural and family dynamics that can make asking for help especially hard — family expectations, the stigma around mental health, intergenerational pressures. You won't have to explain that context here. Before starting my practice, I spent six years as a counselor at a diverse urban school and taught graduate counseling students. My approach is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental — therapy works best when you feel genuinely understood, not analyzed. Together, we'll make sense of what's happening, build practical tools for the hard days, and move toward the life you want. All sessions are held over secure video, so you can meet from your dorm, apartment, or home anywhere in Illinois — no commute, no waiting room.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first session is a conversation, not an interrogation. We'll talk about what's bringing you in, what you're hoping for, and whether we're a good fit — there's no pressure to have it all figured out on day one. My style is warm and collaborative. I'll ask thoughtful questions, offer honest reflections, and we'll build practical tools you can actually use between sessions. This isn't the kind of therapy where we talk in circles. I also believe you shouldn't have to educate your therapist about your cultural context — if you're Asian American, that part is already understood here. Logistically: all sessions are over secure video, anywhere in Illinois. You'll get a link before each appointment — just find yourself a private space. I recommend treating it like an in-person visit: show up on time, minimize distractions, give yourself a few minutes afterward to land.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Getting started: Your first session is about understanding where you are and where you want to go. We'll talk through what's bringing you in, relevant history, and what you'd like to be different. By the end, we'll have a shared sense of direction — and you'll know whether I'm the right fit for you. Early sessions: We turn that direction into goals — concrete enough that we'll both know when things are improving. I'll also get a fuller picture of the patterns at play: the stressors, the relationships, the cultural and family dynamics shaping your experience. A typical ongoing session: We start with a check-in — how the week's been, what's on your mind. Then we dig into whatever matters most that day: making sense of a hard situation, practicing a new tool, or working through something that's been stuck. I tend to be active in session — asking questions, offering reflections, connecting dots — rather than just nodding along. We'll usually close by landing on one or two practical takeaways for the week ahead. Over time: Every so often we'll step back and look at the bigger picture — what's shifting, what's still hard, whether our goals need updating. Therapy with me isn't open-ended forever; we're working toward something, and I want you to feel that progress.

Insurance: I'm in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare — including UnitedHealthcare student health plans. If you have one of these, you'll typically just pay your copay or coinsurance, and I'll handle the billing directly. Self-pay: If you're out-of-network or prefer not to use insurance, my session rate is $200. I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
